Need Help Picking Up Wireless Signal and Redistributing
Hi there, I'm new to these forums and was hoping I could get some help. I apologize if this topic has been covered somewhere else, but I have searched for quite a while to no avail and thought it was worth posting my issue.
Me and a few friends are renting a summer home near our university (one block away actually) and are trying to pick up the university's wireless signal. Our laptops can't do so but I know that things such a cantenna CAN pick up the signal since we're only 200-400 feet away from the closest wireless point. I know this is completely LEGAL as I contacted our school's IT department who told me that if we could pick up the signal (as students of the university) we had every right to use it.
With that said, I was hoping to get some help in understanding what we need to make this happen. I want to use a cantenna to pick up the signal, and then something else to redistribute the wireless so that all 5 of us can use it. I'm confused as to what will let us do that. I'd greatly appreciate any help you guys could offer as the best idea I can think of right now is to simply make/purchase 5 cantennas (which is not a very good idea). We have both PCs and Macs, so if a specific router is needed I'd appreciate any advice you have about ones that work with both. Thank you for all the help, it's really appreciated.

In a situation such as this I would create a parabolic dish. Basically you would have a wireless router receiver ( the kind that plug direct into your NIC, or USB). Gut a old DirectTV Dish and silicone the receiver in the dish, then suspend it upside down or like a upside down U. This will have no problem recieving the signal. The only downfall is that it will only work for each person on at a time, unless you implement a hub or switch of somesort.
