| First let me start off by saying I really don’t have a clue about this, I'm not a laptop person. I'm currently stationed overseas at a non-disclosed location and the air base has setup Wi-Fi hot spots. My room is located about 100 feet from one of these spots and I was told that if I got a Wi-Fi booster then I would get Wi-Fi my room. Is this true and if so is there a way to do this without a router? |

If your lappy already has wireless built in/or a pcmcia wireless card, at 100 ft you "should" be able to pick up the signal depending on obstacles.

If you can direct connect maybe you can boost it.
but if you can not connect to it then you probably are going to be able to boost it |

I have a few questions but there are some things you can do without a router. Can you learn if the base installed Belkin, or Netgear or linksys equipment in the hot spots? ( Don't tell ME, you need to know. The fact you did not specifically say Range booster narrows it down.
There are now USB ports that come with a little pedestal so you can stand the antenna upright and point it too. These are the new standard called 802.N ( instead of A, B, or G ) They have in some cases a 3x range. Around $50 online or maybe less at the PX ( what IS the AF term ,,,,BX? )
I'll watch this space for "next steps" Good Luck!

My room is in one building, the bathrooms and showers are in a building infront of mine, and then there is another building with rooms.... when I walk into the other building near the end (towards the wireless spot) I get wireless Quote:

However, it's like 120 to 130 degrees here and 100% humidity... that and the sand always blowing everywhere I dont want to take my laptop outside.
If it was like Texas weather then I'd have no problem...

The problem is the card is internal, so hooking up an antenna is pretty much out of the question without hacking up the laptop.
You could get a usb wireless card that has a cable so you can move it around. However if the admins dont want wireless in your rooms, they are doing that for a reason..... |
