New Modem Woes

I got high speed dsl(yes I know that is an oxymoron) and I just noticed my isp charges me 5 dollars a month for "modem rental". I called them and they said that is standard but for 135 I can buy it. I said to heck with that and got online, tigerdirect had some great deals. I bought the correct modem for what I need. I assume all dsl modems are the same...But I plugged it in, powered on, hit reset and nadda. No internet. Is it possible my isp has some stupid chip in these things making it so only their modems work? I mean, hardware is hardware, plug it in and go right?

Im not 100% sure on this but I think your going to need to call up ur ISP and make an appointment to A) give them back their modem and B) register the MAC address on the modem that you bought.
If you already returned the modem you might be able to just tell them your modems MAC address over the phone.
It should be on the bottom or back of the modem.

Yes, they need to register your Modem and not every ISP allows 3rd Party Modems.
