Cable/DSL w/o the front-end junk?
When I finally take the plunge into one of the above will I be able to have 'naked' internet access without all the proprietary front-end programs gumming up the works? The local cable co. offers you a choice of AOL, EarthLink, and RoadRunner. TIA.

At least with RR you will. I don't know about the others.

With Earthlink, you use your software & don't have to use their's.
The only software of their's you will use is eln helper. it starts your e-mail program from your start page...

ALOHA
At least here in Hawaii,AOL Highspeed is fronted by RR.You get to pay more than RR and enjoy
all the wonderful(gag)stuff AOL has to offer only faster except the wonderful things slow it down again!
Get straight RR....and if they RR set you up to run through their proxy you don,t even have to do that,I don't.
Sometimes its seems faster but only if they have your sites cached or it takes longer one more node.

I use Earthlink DSL, and I don't even need eln helper. My email is just Netscape mail, and all it needs to know is what your mail server is (mail.earthlink.net for me). I'm running Netscape 6.2, but I don't suppose it matters, because it worked fine on 4.7.
The worst thing about AOL for mail is its proprietary file system and address books. Can't import or export from or to more friendly systems.

I would go Eartlink or RR. I currently have Earthlink here in Cali and its been working great for almost 2 years now. I have a router/switch setup so I dont need any of that PPPoE software that Earthlink gives me. I just plug the wires into the corrects spots and off I go. Easy as pie and Im extremely happy with them. (even if stupid verizon, who is my local phone co, caps my DSL speed at 768 down)
YAH! I knew you'd be jealous

Anyway, my cable company doesn't require any "front-end" ISP, and they provide e-mail (seven accounts, I believe).

Yay for almost weekend time! One project I'm going to tackle is changing the transmission/transfer case gear lube in my Subaru this long weekend. Hopefully there's enough of a gap in the rain...
