Linksys Wireless WRT54G - Why do I keep having to reset in order to connect?
** Hoping I can get some help, have been looking for a solution for quite some time now with no luck/responses **
Hi,
I have a WRT54G version 2.0 router, recently I have been experiencing times where upon startup of my pc and trying to open a webpage I find I have no connection to the internet. When I do a hard reset (pressing the button on the router) I am able to connect fine right after, but I also have to reconfigure my wireless security settings.
It might be worth noting that this started happening after I was trying to get my Playstation 3 online and was having difficulty doing so. I decided maybe a firmware upgrade was needed and after upgrading the firmware, things have only gone downhill since then. This has happened about 3+ times now, and all times I have upgraded the firmware for the router. Also, everything is connected to a power bar and so I power it down sometimes and power it back up. I haven't noted when this problem occurs (turning on power bar, or when the power bar is still on and just restarting the PC)
Is anyone able to explain why I keep having to perform resets in order to connect?
Thanks for any help that can be given on this issue.

Are all your clients wireless? Do you have any clients plugged directly into the router? If so, do they experience this issue? If you dont, when you are not getting webpages, plug a pc directly into the router and see if it can still get internet?

Hi GroundZero, I was reading other threads in here and hoping you'd reply

Currently the client in question has a direct ethernet connection to my router (which of course is connected to my modem). When connecting my modem directly and bypassing the router, everything is fine upon startup (no resets required). Only when my wireless router is connected do I encounter connectivity issues, and then have to perform the hard reset (back to factory defaults). Again, after doing the reset the connection is fine.
I just don't want to keep having to input my wireless security settings over and over.

So just to clarify, the client is directly plugged into the router by cat5 cable when this error occurs? Can you ping websites when this happens?

Yes the client, my pc, is directly plugged into the router via cat5 when this error occurs. To be fair I haven't tried pinging any sites when this happens (should've tried that), but for whatever it's worth, pinging google.ca right now goes through just fine.

After the firmware upgrade and reset, did you go back into the GUI and reset your SSID to where you had it before? If not, Linksys has set it back to linksys.
That does not really explain why it works at first though,,,but t needs to be checked.

Hi Networker4321!
Yes I have gone in each time and changed the SSID back to what it originally was named as.

I also experienced some issues similar to yours. Netgear can kiss my ass as the firmware upgrade in the router config gui is a pos and the manual upgrade bricked the router. Same router my friend.
My solution, which you may not like, is to purchase a new router or continue to pull your hair out. You will not fix the router. Sometimes we need to be reminded that we are not going insane, the router simply does not perform as it did the last two years. A hard reset is just that. Factory configs should work if all your changing is the password.
One other thing I experienced on dsl was losing contact with the dns periodically. Totally the isp at fault and not much you can do in that case.

I fixed my router issues today. i wanted to cascade from THE office to the Home office, about 200 ft. I went out and bought a Linksys WRT160n and a WRT610N with USB for storage attach, bought a 1.5 TB Seagate Desktop (or pedestal ) SATA drive. Bount the Linksys N band Network USB cards which come with a cool pedestal that holds the stick upright (for aiming ) and coonects to the PC. (8 x $73 at Walmart) Itching to get the storage hanging off the 610N. Bought two EZSW55 switches as I was running out of ports. Bought Network magic Pro for $50 bucks and it's cool tool. network maps and all.
Wish me luck!
Only downside, tech support still in Calcutta.

Cool. Yes sometimes I think it would be easier learning Hindi then their heavily accented English. I find that many speak superb if you can work through what the hell they are actually stating.
