    Why won't this cable work?

I'm trying to plug a cable from my modem to my pc. I have 2 pcs. On one PC it works fine, i get online when i plug it. I switch the cable to the other pc and nothing happens. i dont get a connection. am i sticking it in the wrong hole? it was wireless before so i have never put a wired connection to it. here are the pics of the hole im trying to put it in. its the only one i see. Is that the right one? thanks.

Yes that is the ethernet port. Is the device enabled in network connections? Have you disabled the wireless device?

thanks. the router is unplugged and i even unscrewed the wirless antenna on the pc. do i have to do something else? set it up to take a wired connection somehow? it starts to register it when it plugs in. the connection icon goes from the red x to the yellow exclamation point like it is trying to connect but it never does. this is a long cable that im running about 25 feet..

Right so you have two PC's and one cable. On one PC the net runs fine, you move the cable to the other and you get the yellow triangle.

    ^^^ Just making sure....

I would make sure you uninstal the wirelesss device, or better yet remove/disable it. If you right click the wired network does it pick up IP and such (networking not my strong point mabye GZ will be more helpfull).

No just the adapter... You are trying to use network controller.

You might have to run "Network Setup Wizard" to tell the PC to use the network adapter, and not the WiFi adapter.

alright. scratch this idea. the only reason i tried it was because i cant get my router set up. the hard connection works fine, but when i plug the modem into the router and then back through the computer i cant get it to work. not even on the wired connection. the power, wlan, internet and ethernet all light up on the router too. everything is lit up and plugged in like it is supposed to but no connection.

I'd suggest that you contact your ISP or wait for a network guy to find interest here.

You will need to reset the modem after switching it because it only leases out one IP address at a time (which was leased to the first item connected and doesn't get refreshed until a reset or the lease expires, which could be hours or days).

    Hi,

I just want to confirm something before I start going off on a tangent...

    Your network connections should be:

WAN --- Modem --- Router --- Switch --- Computer. (Sometimes the Modem, Router and Switch can all be done through a single device, but this depends on your hardware and the function/s they can do)

Also, just out of curiosity, would you happen to be using one of these:
Linksys by Cisco EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch BEFSR41
(Only asking as I thought I recognised the screen from another thread)
I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...
Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...
