| Wired computer low speeds, wireless great speeds
I have really good connection on wireless laptop, and horrible speeds on my wired desktop from my home network.
I have really no idea what to do, I called comcast, they said try to use laptop plugged into modem and router to see what speeds are, and they are very good. So comcast says its an issue with the desktop computer. Any Ideas?
My setup goes something like this;
Comcast is ISP
I have a RCA thomsan broadband modem from them, has a built in battery and stuff so not their regular modem
I have a D-Link 628 wireless router. Recently purchased because linksys died (so the router is all default settings, and the issue actually was happening with the linksys too, so its not a new thing. Only diffference is that I now have a router with wireless capabilities)
I have 3 computer network, but have yet to connect the upstairs computer to the network yet.
The desktop downstairs is Vista 32 home premium.
Wired directly to the router via ethernet
My laptop is using vista 32 homepremium
connected to router via wireless.
So when I go to speedtest.net or any other site (i get different numbers depending but the same oddity is happening on all sites). I am in Salem Oregon, testing a server in Portland Oregon (55 miles or so away)
My desktop (ethernet connection) gets
1.25mb download speed
2.7mb upload speed
32ms ping
My laptop (wireless connection) gets
20mb download speed
2.78mb upload speed
34ms ping
My laptop (ethernet connection) gets
23mb download speed
2.8mb upload speed
34ms ping
these are most recent tests, test run right after each other. Numbers varied slightly between all tests but the drastic difference was always the same.
Any help would be really really helpful
thanks

Is the desktop network card setup to auto duplex? Do you have the latest drivers for the network card installed? |

hello ground I am not sure if it is set to auto, where do I find that? I went to device manager clicked on network card, asked it to update drivers via internet, and it said drivers up to date... is that not the way to update driver for card? |

holy shit i think i just fixed it that duplex setting on my laptop was set at auto negotiate, so i set it at that also flow control was set to disabled, but on my laptop it was set to tx & rx enabled i did that, and did a speed test, hit 23.8mb download and 2.79 upload speed so i think that was my problem for some reason the device was set like that... |
