| Verizon modem/router problem
Hi, I just bought a Westell Versalink 327w from a yard sale to use with my verizon dsl. My old modem works fine, no problems with the dsl, just wanted it for the router features. My problem is that it powers on, ethernet connects, dsl is solid, but I can't get internet.
I've tried resetting the modem by holding the reset button for 30 seconds. It goes back to default settings, but wants me to set up a profile and enter my verizon account key and password. I have no idea what these things are. They are not the same thing as the initial login/password that the router wants, the one that I change from "admin/password" to something custom. If I leave those blank, it goes thru the menus, says I'm finished, tries to connect with PPP, and can't.
I've google searched for hours with no luck, and, for reasons anyone knows who's tried their tech support, I don't want to have to call Verizon. Could anyone suggest something/help me out/shove me in the right direction? |

Most DSL connections require your client/router to have a username and password. Contact verizon to get this information and enter it into the router! |

Nobody who can't access your account details at your ISP can give you the information you're going to need....

I figured I'd post a follow-up since you two were kind enough to reply. The solution wasn't quite what I figured or understand.
I called Verizon and got an intelligent but very hard to understand tech support guy. Didn't have to go over the basic "have you checked to see if your phone line is plugged in", which was nice. He gave me an account ID and password, which after I put in, still didn't get the modem to connect. He then said I needed to switch from PPP to DHCP, so I went to WAN configuration and clicked edit next to the PPP that was enabled. I then switched my protocol to bridge and my mode to routed bridge, then enabled DHCP. I finished by clicking Set VC, and my modem reset. None of this made sense to me, but I don't know much about it.
My internet still wasn't on, and he asked me if I'd done everything correctly, so we went over it for about another 5 minutes. He then went silent for a few more minutes, and then asked if my internet was on now. I glanced at the modem and said "Whoa! It's on! Did you do something?" and he said "Yes, I did some things to make it work."
So the modem/router works fine now, but I can't say I really learned why. Plus he told me this configuration doesn't need the account ID and password info, so that was useless, I guess. Couldn't have resolved it without calling them though, so thanks for the replies. |

Glad to hear that it is working..!
It is hard to know (without knowing what it is that he had done) what the cause was, but it could have been that the account (with the ISP) was confused and had been "stuck". It is possible that he reset the line/account, which then meant that the router was able to re-connect - but like I said, it is very difficult to know what the issue was... |
