Huh, I thought I posted a reply yesterday from my phone. It must not have had a good connection at the time.

My garage is on a separate electrical circuit that the rest of the apartment. It is attached to the apartment building, but not my apartment. I still have to walk through the breezeway to get to my apartment.

However, because of that, I do not have to pay for the electricity that gets used in the garage. It is all paid by the apartment complex, which is another reason why I would like to have my server which runs 24/7 in the garage as I won't have to pay for the electricity it draws.

Powerline technology is a hit and a miss still, even the newer stuff. Being on a different circuit will affect speeds but its something you can try out!

I don't think you'll have a problem streaming with N; I've been doing it for some time now, even to G-based machines.

I would get a MIMO N router and mount it as high as you can. And you'll want to lock it down security-wise. Last apartment I went to help a friend out with their wireless, I got about 10 wireless networks listed; 1/2 of them had ZERO security set.

Yes, I plan on using the latest WPA. Currently, I am using WEP 128bit as my wireless bridge that my desktop is using to connect to the network is so old it does not support WPA.

However, this apartment has two network connections in each room (Well, there are only two rooms, the living and the bedroom ) So my desktop will most likely be hard wired and both my PS3 and my Lpatop support the latest WPA (My laptop even has an 802.11n network card built in).

I am hoping that Sony releases a wireless N connecter like Microsoft is doing with the Xbox 360.

I would think that being on a different circuit would mean that I won't get any signal? The Garage is in no way wired at all to my apartment, so how would the signal get from the garage's electrical lines to my apartment's?

I am signing the lease tomorrow at 1 (My Application was approved yesterday) and my move in date right now is December 16th. But they said it could be sooner as so far, the last 3 buildings have been finished 3 weeks earlier than scheduled.

So I have a little while to shop for a good Wireless N router. Definentally one with MIMO.

Do any of the routers that advertise "Range boost or Speed Boost" actually work? I know my grandparents bought a Linksys Wireless G router last year with "Speed Boost" and it seems to transfer stuff over the wireless network around 2-3mbps faster than my Linksys Wireless G. But that could be a lot of different things.

Dont waste your money on the speed booster crap, its pretty much marketing crap that isnt a standard. Also when you have several clients connect to a G network the speeds are split in half with every client (Which will effect your HD streaming) This does not happen with N.

As for your powerline question, i really haven't played much with it as its something that seems to have a lot more cons than pros (especially when you have wireless options that will fulfill your needs)

Residential powerline networking kits typically do not cross over transformers. If the two drops are not shared on the same primary feed (box), forget it.

As has been stated, 802.11n should suffice assuming a decent signal and proper configuration. Even my 802.11g network typically moves upwards of 22Mbps data transfers, though it is being handled by an 802.11n router.

Thought I remembered reviewing a powerline networking kit, right here at TechIMO nonetheless.

Network Performance

The HomePlug networking standard limits communications to a peak throughput of 14Mbps, which will certainly not break any data transfer records. Our testing showed the actual bandwidth to be much closer to the 6Mbps range. Either way, transferring large files will be annoying, but the connection is more than capable of handing Internet connection sharing and even the occasional LAN game. Up to 16 adapters can be installed to a single network, but expect performance to quickly diminish above three to four active users.

Signal Range

The trade-off for performance is range. Actiontec claims its HomePlug kit is capable of 300-meter connections. The adapter's networking signal can pass through circuit breakers, but not through power transformers. In fact, the signal will not even pass through most surge protectors. Still, the range is more than adequate for home or small office use, and the system proved viable in every room of our test environment: a 3000 square feet single story home. As to potential signaling conflicts, Actiontec indicates its HomePlug devices operate on a frequency that will not disrupt other power line control standards, such as X-10, CEBus, or LONworks.

Note, the HomePlug networking signal could in theory be passed to an adjoining home if both dwellings are connected to a single transformer, thus enabling the 56-bit security layer is strongly advised if you have a tech-savvy neighbor. The problem increases by an order of magnitude for people living in apartments and other close quarters, so proper security is a definite must.

So something like this that says it has wireless transfer reates of 300mbps is just advertisement fluff? I thought 802.11n was 144mbps?

Newegg.com - D-Link DGL-4500 IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11a/b/g, IEEE802.11n Draft Xtreme N Gaming Router - Wireless Routers

Also, are there non-draft routers out yet? All the ones I have seen so far still say Draft. I know that 802.11n was just passed recently, but was wondering if any of the big players have a true 802.11n router and not just a Draft out yet?

Also, I've read that getting a router with external antennas is better. All of my previous routers have had external antennas and I bought $20 "boost" antennas that helped with my old cell phone picking up the wifi better.

As Rob has stated in the past, most of the Draft stuff (newer) will be fine for the finalization of N

The 300 Mbps is in theory under perfect conditions which is usually never
