    Question Internet Will Not Connect?

My neighbor says her PC a Dell Desktop will not connect to the internet. Also her sister's laptop also a DELL will also not connect to the internet. But their mom's desktop computer does connect to the internet. They use ATT Internet Service.

Sister 1 DELL Desktop uses Windows XP
Sister 2 DELL Laptop uses Windows Vista

So how can they fix this problem?

Hi, and WELCOME TO TECHIMO - from the Folding@Home Team [#111]..!

We would need more details on how they're trying to connect, whether they can see each other's computers and what the IP details they're getting are..

For example, are the two computers with issues trying to access the internet via the wireless (WLAN) or are they attached to the network (LAN) with a network cable? Also, if they aren't getting a 'valid' IP address, or one that doesn't match the same 'subnet' that the gateway (and working computer) use, or don't have a gateway specified, then they won't be able to get out - the same goes for if they don't have a working route to the DNS server...

Another major thing to check would be what type of device their internet (WAN) is connecting with, as a router (or router/switch combi device) would be more appropriate for WAN sharing than a USB connected device...

Let us know so that we can help you help them..

They are using a Wireless Router to connect to the internet.

You are pretty stingy with the info.

Do all 3 computers connect by wireless?

    Did they ever work?

What are the setting on each computer, as N L M asked?

    Network connection properties?

If you go onto the Mum's computer and select Run, then type in 'cmd' [Enter], then you should have a command line interface (CLI) where you should type 'ipconfig/all' [Enter] note down the settings, and post it here.

Once you've done that, do the same on both of the other computers... Note that anything newer than XP will have significantly more details listed, as they will have duplicated connections with different types of link (Toledo, IPv6, etc). We only need one or two, but if you post it all then we can pull the details we need...

Let us know, then we can provide a better response....

Maybe the other 2 Dell pc don't have any Wifi or USB for wireless connection. I have a Linksys router attached to my desktop, and can use my IBM laptop into internet connection but I insert a usb (TP-Link)wireless on the side slot, etc. of the laptop. It works. No config needed. The router auto finds the IP itself. So, try checking your router connection, usb wireless link, and "enable" the Dell's internet connection.
