Remote access
Is there a way to access my notebook with XP from my droid x. The notebook has access to a standard phone line with NO internet service. I will need to dial into the notebook through a modem, but all the software and apps I've found need internet on both ends. Any suggestions.

Are you trying to access the notebook from a distance or just network the two devices together? Does the notebook have a wireless card? If so you might be able to setup and ad-hoc network.

I need to access the notebook from a distance. The notebook is at a farm, I want to access it from off site to check on some environmental controllers. I bought a modem that plugs into the ethernet connection on the notebook. PC Anywhere is supposed to work with windows phones, but I'd like to stick with my droid if at all possible. The notebook does have a wireless card. I am computer illiterate, so Mr. Potato Head answers please. Thanks

I'm not sure the settings you need to setup the laptop and modem so you can dial into your computer w/o an active network connection but you might checkout LogMeIn Ignition for Android for software that allows a remote connection https://secure.logmein.com/US/produc...ition/android/

I cannot imagine this working the way you want it to...
Are you simply wanting it to allow you to view data displayed on the laptop, and not actually interact with it?
Maybe some more specific info on what your actually trying to accomplish would help get better feedback...

Even if you have a Laptop with Wireless and a Modem connected to it, it does NO good till you are connecting though a Internet Service Provider. Your laptop needs to be able to get on the Internet via Wireless Modem at the farm, or some sort of satellite connection.
Then only can you access the Laptop at the farm from the Phone.

What?? For most software all he needs is an internet connection of any kind it doesn't need to be wireless or satellite, dialp would work but it would be slow.
From what I gather he's trying to find software that allows him to dial directly from his phone and connect into the modem on the laptop. You use to be able to do this from modem to modem but I'm not sure you can do it from phone to modem like the way I think he's trying.

amahure, the modem in the laptop allows the laptop to be its own network, just like a miniature version of the internet. Private dial-up servers were once common, but I'm not sure the Android phone could be used that way. It should be technically possible, but the software may not exist. Also, the built in modem capabilities of GSM service are slow and will be expensive to use in minutes.
Without a broadband internet connection, the section of the GSM technology you would be using would be this:
From Wireless modem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaWhile some analogue mobile phones provided a standard RJ11 telephone socket into which a normal landline modem could be plugged, this only provided slow dial-up connections, usually 2.4 kilobit per second (kbit/s) or less. The next generation of phones, known as 2G (for 'second generation'), were digital, and offered faster dial-up speeds of 9.6kbit/s or 14.4kbit/s without the need for a separate modem. A further evolution called HSCSD used multiple GSM channels (two or three in each direction) to support up to 43.2kbit/s. All of these technologies still required their users to have a dial-up ISP to connect to and provide the Internet access - it was not provided by the mobile phone network itself.

Alright, I'm back. Lots of replies. Ok, the notebook at the farm runs a program that allows me to see and manipulate six different environmental controllers in six different poultry barns. I am needing to see and manipulate that program from anywhere with my android phone. The only internet service available would be mobile broadband, which I am trying to stay away from for costs reasons. I think Paul9 is right, it should be possible, but the software doesn't exist. There is a software called pc anywhere that is supposed to work on a windows phone.
I know pc to pc is possible over a standard phone line, but I think I'm out of luck on using my droid to accomplish this.
Any thoughts on using a pc that has DSL to piggy back to my standard phone line notebook. Droid----DSL/pc-----modem notebook. This seems like it may be very slow, but I'm not sure.
