Need new router suggestions..current too slow

Right now I have a Dlink dir-615 but when I do speed test for my internet I can't get over 15Mbps. When I plug my internet in through cat5 I can get a 30Mbps download speed on speedtest.net. I'm assuming this means my router and maybe my w-nic need updating? What are my options? The router is in the same room as the computer but on the side.

Are you plugged into the router or are you talking about wireless?

When I plug straight to the cable modem I get 30mbps.. when I go through the wireless on the router I get 12mbps...ping stays about the same. I do have the option to plug in to the router but I want to fix the wireless problem. My wireless card is a DWA 552.

What speeds do you get when you plug directly into the router? Just curious. How old is that router?

Going through the router wired I get 33mbsp down. The router is around 2 years old. Since it's N draft does that means its slower then regular N would be?

You're saying that 12mbps is right for N?

Do you have the latest firmware installed for the router and see if there are any updates/firmware updates for the wireless card?

Drivers are all up to date.. I found the problem to be the encryption. I took it off and speeds are equal to wired. I wonder why the encryption is slowing it down so much.. maybe i'll try a differnt kind

I've tried all the types of encryption and they all slow the speed down to less then half of having no encryption.

Yes encryption does slow down your network connection because of the overheard and depending on the router can be more or less. How old is that router?

I bought it in 2008... I understand encryption could slow down the network a little bit, but slowing from 32 to 12mbps seems a little too much.

What wireless mode is the wireless running in? Depending on the router specs encryption is heavy on the cpu, if the cpu is taxed you aren't gonna get great performance from it.

It's running at 130M maybe I need to change my options so it runs at 300M? My cpu is a I7 920 so I'm pretty sure it's not affecting my internet performance.

The cpu on the router, not your computer
