    Modem keeps restarting

I have a motorola surfboard sbv5222 modem that keeps restarting and sometimes it will go through all of the lights and load right back and then other times i will have to wait hours until it finally decides to reconnect. I have tried a lot of different things to fix this and the longest i have went without it restarting is two days. I am getting very frustrated because it always disconnects at the most inconvenient times, and also takes out my phone with it. Sometimes it will disconnect and then work for a few minutes and keep resetting over and over. I had a linksys wrt54g router hooked up as well, but it does not make a difference whether i unhook it or not, it always continues to restart so i know its not my router.. Please help, about to smash my modem

Who is your ISP have you contacted them with the issue?

I had similar issues with Comcast and the fix ended up being them having to come out and re-do my lines.

I have and they said about wanting to come in and i kind of didnt want them to because i have three pitbulls and one of them isnt too great with strangers . I noticed that the battery pack in my modem was really hot, so i took it out. It stopped messing up for like three days, and now everytime i try to load a website it messes up. It wasnt actually resetting my modem at first, and to get my internet working again i had to go to command and type ipconfig/flushdns and it would pop back on.. after doing that about 3 times (in a row) to get it to work my modem reset, but immediately reloaded again and is now working again. Any idea?

Well flushing the dns on your particular pc has nothing to do with the modem disconnecting, well not directly. It just means that when it drops the connection your pc isn't getting the refreshed settings from the modem.

In all honesty it sounds like an issue your isp is going to have to check. So take the dogs somewhere for the day, lock them in the bathroom or whatever and let them troubleshoot it on their end.

You can check your connection and make sure everything is nice and tight, log into the modem settings page if you can find it and looks at the logs but its really difficult to troubleshoot a modem.

Is this a new connection? or an old one? Has it ever ran smoothly without these issues or is it something that just started.

this is an old connection. Ive had it for atleast 4 years now and it never had any problems like this before. Thanks for the help, i was just hoping it was an easy fix, lol. I found out that putting my dogs in the bathroom just gets me a hole in my door:P It started about 3-4 months ago and it would only go off every so often, and now its more and more frequent the more i let it go. But thanks again, Ill definitely be having them come look at it.

I have the same problem with a motorola modem through Time Warner. And its been that way off and on for a couple of years

Weird thing is that it seems to only happen during daylight hours... So its only been an occasional problem on some weekend days... Someday I'll have to phone it in for service..

I have Time Warner coming out this afternoon... But I solved my issue

Short version - after coming home yesterday and finding the modem stuck flashing on the 3rd out of four green lights-> I replaced the 20 foot coaxial cable..Reset the modem and all is good...

I guess the 100+ º heat in the attic was or did something to the old cable

The Time Warner tech replaced all the cable in my attic with new/thicker more heat resistant cable. He said my modem strength numbers were horrible... And he was surprised that I was getting digital channels on the TV. He also said that the occasional TV screen distortion I was getting should be gone.

Had a similar experience with Comcast at one of my sites. Told the tech that we would occasionally go down and it was not a service outage for the area. On inspecting the readings for the signal strength, he informed me that it was surprising we had even TV signal strong enough. I sent him into the attic to find three splitters that had been used at the time of construction to get signal to TVs throughout the building. These had since been replaced and we no longer used them but we did use those lines to get service for our modem. Once he made a long enough cable that we didnt need to use the splitters to get the coax to run to the modem, the lines signal strength jumped well about "normal" and we have not had a signal issue since.

Especially if you have an older home, you may want to spend some time tracking down where your coax runs go or if you have unused splitters that are allowing to shorter cables instead of one longer one.
