| What is your internet connection?
I am curious...
how many people out there fall into one of these camps.
1) I have always had broadband service.
2) I had dial-up and now have switched to broadband.
3) I have dial-up and can't get broadband.
4) I have dial-up and choose not to get broadband.
I have recently gotten broadband service and am curious in this day and age how many ppl are out there that have never dealt with the frustrations of dial-up. |

Dialup from the times of 1200bps modems
Broadband for a year now, first 512/256 adsl connection, now 256/56 (the upstream seems so, whilst I believe it is rated 128).

I have cable but at times it's slower than my backup dialup . I made the switch 3 years ago and it was great. Adelphia pulled an AOL tactic and signed a boatload of people up in the area and never did the required upgrades. Ther're about to go under and I'm waiting for RoadRunner to take over and straighten everything out.

Always been only dialup.
I voted: 'Have dial-up and choose not to have broadband'.
I have to pay the installation for Cable broadband, I am very rural. From what I've heard thus far from the cable people, this might be pricey. The company is too laid back ('Sure, we'll answer any question'.... good luck figuring out what is the right question, 'cuz they only know 'yes', 'no', and $$).
At 1//4 mile over 4 power poles, this may not be cheap (running AC power was $3300 back in '85)!
The DSL stuff is within reach, and the lines are already run to the house...... too bad the only DSL provider I found was a dialup company that I already left because of poor service. Is there a site where I can find who provides DSL in my area? I tried http://www.findanisp.com .
Satellite is not what I want, either.

Why do you say the frustrations of dial-up?
I don't know how it is in other parts of the country but here in Wisconsin all of the ISP's have no busy signals (had dotnet for about 4 years now and got a busy signal once and that was because the phone company was working on the lines)...
I connect at 49.2 minimum (normally 52.6 or thereabouts)...
I get wicked download speeds [for 56k] (7k with 6k being norm and I have gotten 10-12k for megabytes and megabytes before)...
I very rarely get disconnected.
And if you pay a year in advance, which we do, it's about 12.95 month. Plus 4.95 for a second phoneline. that's less than $20/month. I refuse to pay $55/month for Charter cable that is down and up as often as the sun and rips you off on pricing too.
I may not have the fastest connection on earth, but I can:
1) Play Tribes 2 with low pings (100-200 max of 300)
2) Download files at reasonable speeds
3) Host eggdrops (not always good for that though)
4) etc.
So I so no reason for me to give up reliability, cost-effectiveness, free SPAM filtering (which my ISP offers, and works great) and a second phoneline for speed.
