Router issue
Hey guys. I have a linksys wrt54gc. I have used it for years with no problems. Until I updated the firmware yesterday... now it will not assign ip addresses correctly. I cannot get into the web based settings page now. The error I get is: The connection has timed out... The server at 192.168.1.1 is taking too long to respond. I have tried everything I know. I reset and restarted the router. The router works for my pc hard wired only, and no other device (TV, Xbox). Wireless does not connect. I have tried to set the ip manually, but when I do I cannot connect to the internet. ipconfig says:

So if you connect the computer to the router, you can get internet?
Is that what that ipconfig is from? It looks like a direct to the modem connection.

Exactly, that IP config is from the modem directly. Connect the router to the computer then do an ipconfig.
There is a thing called the 30-30-30 rule. Where is before you flash your router with new firmware you press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds then while holding the reset button you unplug the router and while holding the reset button you wait 30 seconds, plug back in and wait 30 more seconds while still holding the reset button. This is insures a proper firmware flash.
Hard reset or 30/30/30 - DD-WRT Wiki# With the unit powered on, press and hold the reset button on back of unit for 30 seconds
# Without releasing the reset button, unplug the unit and hold reset for another 30 seconds
# Plug the unit back in STILL holding the reset button a final 30 seconds
Do this and reflash.

It is connected to the router and that is what I get. Everything I try my computer does not recognize the router. But I assure you it is plugged in, and I have tried resetting it who knows how many times. I have even tried running ipconfig with no modem and the same numbers come up. And yes I do get internet this way, but that is it. Router won't ping or anything.

Okay, next question, is the cable from the modem connected to the WAN port on the router? If both the modem and computer are connected to LAN ports, the router is probably just acting like a hub and sending the signal straight through to the modem.

Okay, let's just clarify a few things...brain isn't quite up-to-speed yet, and I haven't had chocolate...
1) Is anything able to connect to the interweb..?
2) What similarities are there between the devices that can get online..?
3) What similarities are there between the devices that can't get online..?
4) Have you tried doing an 'ipconfig/release' followed by 'ipconfig/renew' from the machines..?
5) What steps have you taken so far..?I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

modem is in the WAN port. Everything else in LAN.
The only thing getting internet is my computer. All other devices are not assigned IP addresses, subnet mask, gateway, dns, etc...
Just tried release/renew. same IP as before.
I have also tried a static IP for the computer this results in no internet at all.
Also tired resetting it different ways. holding and unplugging... the works.Last edited by Crazycow2332; August 5th, 2011 at 11:31 AM.

Are you using xDSL or DSL..? DSL is "cable", xDSL goes over the phone lines..
If you're using DSL, then have you tried shutting everything off (power down all computers, etc, and the cable modem and the router) and then bringing things back up in the sequence from the ISP..? That would be cable modem, wait for it to have settled down and become 'ready'; then bring up the router and leave it until that's ready; then bring up *one* computer...
I've seen it several times where the DSL server locks down to the first MAC address that it 'sees' - so if your computer is up and ready before the router has finished preparing itself, the modem only serves data to the ps, which matches what you've got...
It might also be a good idea to check the details for your router to see what the default IP configuration is for it...but it *should* normally have DHCP enabled by default, so you should get a "private" IP from it..something like 192.168.x.y with a /24 (255.255.255.0) subnet mask; most often the "X" would be either 0 or 1, but I'm only on my [GPRS] BlackBerry for now, and can only have one browser window open...I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

I tried turning off everything and starting turning them on in order... still nothing. I do have DSL (cable). Default IP is 168.192.1.1, but shows something else. DHCP is enabled. I'm starting to think a new router is in my future... thank you linksys for a wonderful firmware update.

Is there a way to reflash the router without the setup page from my browser?

Telnet, but it complicated. You are flashing the router with the LAN cable and not through wifi?
I notice they have the older version, may want to try and restore that. Linksys by Cisco - WRT54GC Support

I forgot to mention that when you start everything up in turn, as per my previous post, the modem 'sees' the WAN port of the router first, and locks it down to that...which doesn't matter as the router the passes it on to the other port/s on the back of it anyway... That's more for info than for now, as you've stated that it didn't work for you.
Yeah, you should be able to make changes via TELNET (from the CLI window; Start --> Run --> 'cmd' [Enter] --> 'telnet /?' [Enter] for the prompt and suggested "flags" to use) but it is definitely *not* easy................and would only work if you know what the IP of the thing is anyway...I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...
