Help! Can I get out of my home network running Astaro web admin? 2 modems?
My brother has taken over the internet for years and I'm tired of it never working and him not maintaining it. Things never work and I don't have time to wait 3 weeks for him to "try" to fix it. I believe he has the Fios cable to a modem, then to a server which runs the Astaro web admin (pos program that blocks everything from working but Google it seems) all internet is filtered by that program for viruses and such then i think it runs to the routers and to our computers.
Basically i think its Fios to modem to server to router to comp. Anyways Im wanting to find a way off of the network and around the server. Is it possible? I don't know much about networking but if its possible to split it into 2 modems so I could control my own that would be perfect. any suggestions? its been at least 7 years of this bs. Thanks for any help

Who pays for the internet connection?
Fios can not be split into with two modems.

Could you maybe connect into the router before it goes through this stupid server? Or turn on the WIFI of the router? Do you even have a router or is this a straight connection from the modem to the server? And what is the server suppose to do? Filter? There are a couple of great DNS servers that will filter malware and phishing sites, etc without a server. They are NortonDNS and OpenDNS.
Reading your post again it sounds like there is no router. Buy a router and route past the server.
Oh, your a little SOL on trying to get past the server sense its handing out the DHCP. You will need a router to get past the server. If your bro allows it. Tell him about NortonDNS and OpenDNS. saves power!Last edited by Taxmancometh; August 25th, 2011 at 03:49 PM.

yeah I've tried in the past plugging straight into the router but it doesn't give me access for some reason. Id be willing to buy my own router if it would work at this point. The program Astaro actually installs on the server like an OS I believe. And yes its meant to prevent all that as well as give him the ability to block ports and everything. I can never get connected to game servers for like Crysis or little big planet for PS3 and stuff like that. He wont shut it off even if I had 4 anti viruses on my computer. Hes retarded that way. Its basically like being at a school or in an office where everything is blocked type of thing, except for the internet stability here now is crap.

so from what I can tell (its hard to see cause its all in the garage in a giant server case. But what I got was (*'s are to just move things since spaces wont)
ISP
*l
MODEM>------IBM Eserver >----- (blue flat 15 pin Cisco cable going somewhere)
**l
**L>------ HP compaq computer case shell likely running Astaro
************* L>---- Switch (theres 2 24 plug switches that run to wireless routers and computers i think is how its set up)
So the Modem splits into a server that is for a backup server i think (IBM Eserver) and then another server thats for Astaro and thats what controls the internet filters. Then the astaro server feeds to one switch which feed off to another switch and some other things.Last edited by Shadow22; August 26th, 2011 at 05:02 PM.

4GB is about the minimum you want for good performance. I kicked up to 8 and I noticed the difference. Especially in games.
