Router Recommendation
Im finally coming out...... Out of the dark ages of dialup that is and I needs a router. I was looking at a Linksys but a friend of mine has one and the WAN connection tends to disappear. Not sure if its his router or not, but Id like to know what to get. Help a cable n00b, what should I get?

I'm with jman on this one. I don't think you can go wrong with the Linksys. I was kind of skeptical at first, thinking that if everyone was using it, then it would be easier for the haX0r's to "break" it. So far so good though. I'm sure Uncle Bill at M$ can see everything on my PC, but that's okay, he and I are buds and we e-mail each other all the time...
Sorry, where was I? PShawn, as far as the Belkin, I don't own one, but from talking with others that have dealt with their other products...I'd say stay away from it.

I also have used this router with much success. I also loose the WAN connection but it is almost allways at or about 1:00 AM. Charter Pipeline maybe doing some server sweeping at that time I'm not sure. I have never lost my connection during the day and I don't think it is the bsfr41 causing the problem.Originally posted by jman01pa

Use Linksys BEFSR41 router at home (3 pcs, 1 print server, aDSL modem) for about 2.3 years.
This is the second one... first one took a power surge from a nearby lightening strike a couple weeks ago, and one of the 4 ports was still usable!!!
I've never had a problem with the Linksys... easy to set up, easy to upgrade firmware (analogous to BIOS flashing), maintains connection 24/7, good speed, never any down time.
My lightening storm replacement
ran about $75.
Don't know that I'd go the wireless version on any router, however, since I have no first hand experience regarding perfomance and reliability.

I guess that settles it. CubKid and PShawn5 are getting Linksys routers!
Let us know if there's anything else you want to buy but don't know if you should. I'm sure one or all of us here can talk you into it.

Quoting jman:
I heartily concur. I've run 2 boxes sharing one DSL signal with this 4-port router for several months, with Linksys Ethernet cards in each box, CAT5e cable (self-crimped! Well, my wife did the RJ-45s!) Not a single problem.I have used the Linksys bsrf41 for a long time with great results.
Good luck!

I use a Linksys befsr41 too. The problems you guys on Charter are having date back to an unresolved DHCP problem from when there service was provided by HSA. Last time I saw that problem was 2 yrs ago when I was an installer and they said the Techs were working on it. Used to happen on 24/7 on comps as well as the routers.

Thas cool. Linksys it'll probably be. Im just a little weary of the disappearing WAN. Guess I'll have to buy one and see for myself. Thanks again.

I use an old Pentium 100MHz with two 3Com 509b cards in it running Windows 98 and WinRoute. Works great. You could use Smoothwall or Freesco as a Linux alternative. With Freesco you don't even have to have a harddrive.
Plus it looks alot cooler than a little grey box that just looks like a hub or a switch.
