Unreliable Iomega NAS/cloud server

I own an Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive, Cloud Edition.

I do NOT want this device to be served over the internet. If I wanted it on the internet, I've read that it would need to be DMZd off from the DSL modem. That is not my goal, that has never been attempted by me.

I have attached it to a spare wireless router, an older Belkin G (F5D7231-4). I have tried attaching it to a Linksys wrt160nv2, and to a Netgear N2000v3. The Belkin is the only WiFi router that I own where I can successfully transfer a 2 Gig ISO file, but I succeed only 50% of the time out of 2 attempts. I do not trust that success rate at all. The other 2 routers fail within seconds, the Belkin got to well over 1.8 Gig before it failed on the second attempt.

What I saw: on the Linksys and the Netgear, I feel that the transfers simply stop very early, but OS and interface timers are set too long for the interface software to see the failure until tens of minutes later. I say this because the HMNHDCE activity light stops flickering within seconds, but

1] I am VERY rural - nobody is hacking at anything.
2] I am not very far apart - 3 feet for most of the tests.
3] Failures took place with W7, WVHP, Linux; Failed using Samba access on all OS and using the Iomega software in all OS.
4] The situations above were all with all OS security and device security turned off, with the web server inside the drive also turned off, with the least possible amount of protocols enabled.
5] Iomega support essentially has no idea what is wrong, even after getting all the services in the drive minimized; when I managed to transfer the 2G file ONE time for them, they basically blamed the other routers and washed their hands of the matter.
6] Linksys support was not available, because I was out of the 90 day support period; their user forum was pretty much clueless yet their forum is loaded with Iomega storage connectivity problems.
7] Netgear support ... I think they never responded, but that was months ago.

I am admittedly NOT very savvy about WiFi, but I suspect the Linksys and Netgear routers need something disabled or enabled, I suspect the Belkin may not even offer whatever is causing the problem for the other 2 (these are layman guesses). I have never done this stuff before.

I am not sure what to do, does anyone have one of these Iomega HMNHDCE thingies working for them?

For giggles have you hard wired it and did a transfer to see if you run into the same issue?

Yeah, old thread. This drive has been attached to my eMachines on-board ethernet port for nearly a year. It clacks and klunks randomly when I have not yet accessed it during the day. When I access it tonight, using Dolphin 1.7 in Kubuntu 12.04, I can only see the drive as a Network share. It needs several minutes to get connected when you click anything, then it offers "Digital Audio Access", a service type "Unknown service", a "Workgroup Manager" type, and finally a "Web server". The only type which responds at all is the Web server type, clicking it launches Firefox, and it needs about 10 seconds to begin loading a web page for login on the drive. Slow by my tastes.

Encryption, however is enabled. I'll try running it for a while with that off.

Well, turning off 2 default services which remained active after all my troubleshooting and then after disabling encryption, all together the changes make the drive much more responsive, and had it been like this from day one, I might have been a much happier camper. Shame it was such a dog since the very beginning, and even after 'factory reset'. It is a shame because it is NOW a bit old, many power on hours despite being unused 99.97% of that time.

Not sure what to do with it next.

In summary, I feel it was over configured and over featured; this configuration caused bad transfer performance, which in turn caused me to distrust it.
IMO, all due to being a design that was overdone and misconfigured.
