laptop won't connect to wired internet connection.

    Hello everyone,

I've a compaq presario laptop, which won't connect to any wired internet connections, but it does connects through wi-fi. But my other laptop like (this one I'm using to write this) works perfectly fine with the same wired connection. It happened earlier too, but a friend of mine did something and it worked, but this time he says he can't do anything because it shows 0 received in the activity section under "local area connection status". It happened all after I gave my laptop to a shop for cleaning the fan. I'm not sure if he removed something out of it (is it possible coz, it looks like some software prob to me, one more reason I'm not doubting is coz it has happened before.

I see an exclamatory sign in the network icon.

I tried several thing like ip config, updating the network driver, formatting the laptop and installing the new windows7, but nothing works.

If your seeing the exclamatory sign that means the proper driver isn't installed.

But it worked earlier with the same driver. I've also updated the drivers, but no use..

    Hi Badjam,

The exclamation point indicates a problem with the driver. Can you tell me what the error is?

when I check the device manager, all the drivers shown are latest. When I troubleshoot through the network icon it shows me an error saying "Local area connection does not have valid IP connection"

Further information my laptop model is Compaq presario CQ61-408TX, I've win7-32 bit installed in it. The network adapters under device manager shows :Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter, Realtek PCIe FE Family controller

What do you get if you open the CLI and type in "ipconfig"..?

Start --> "cmd" [Enter] --> ipconfig [Enter]

Also, can you show us a snip of what you see in the Device Manager for the NIC...
I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...
Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

Your second pic shows the Device Manager, and only for the NIC (Network Interface Card) which shows that it is functioning as the computer expects...

The first pic shows that the NIC can see the network, but didn't get a "valid" IP assigned to it by a DHCP server...

Perhaps you should run IPCONFIG/all on your wireless NIC (when connected) to see what that shows the settings to be..... ;o)

I don't know if this will work, but maybe going into the network properties and disabling IPv6 will help.

    Hi,

Can you disconnect the LAN (wired) connection and run the ipconfig/all command again, as it looks like it connected but didn't show an IP addy...

Also, we're only really needing to see the first three sections of the results - at least as far as the last screenie showed...

Disabling IPv6 isn't likely to be of any use...

Err, everything in that is listed as disconnected.....which wouldn't be any help - nor would disabling IPv4 either....

Can you re-enable IPv4, disconnect the LAN cable and connect to the wireless network, then do it again...should give you something similar to what I've got here:

    Perfect.

    IP:
    192.168.229.50/24
    GW:
    192.168.229.1

Okay, so, now we know what the basic details you'd need are....can you manually set the cable settings to use:
    IPv4 Address:
    192.168.229.51

    Subnet mask:
    255.255.255.0

    Gateway:
    192.168.229.1

(For the DNS settings, use 192.168.229.1 again, but it doesn't matter for now)

See whether that gets you the connection up message...then tell us how you get on...

Didn't work I've attached the ipconfig/all result after doing this setting.

What was the status of the network icon when you had that set manually, and were you able to PING the gateway (92.168.229.1) either/too...?

Network status was as usual it showed (!) symbol. I didn't understand what you mean by Pinging the gateway, I was able to click ok though. Please let me know if you want to know something else.
