    Uverse 2wire 3801HGV vs Motorola NVG 510

I need advice on changing my Gateway Modem. I have the 2wire 3801HGV with wireless G and uverse 24 mbps I have a main win7 computer and a win7 HTPC hardwired with cat6 and an xbox hardwired to the HTPC as a media center extender. I use the wireless G for my Galaxy Note phone.
The xbox extender occasionaly experiences network difficulties.
I want better network performance and wireless N for the phone.

ATT will give me the Motorola NVG 510 with wireless N. There are a lot of bad posts about the NVG 510.

Would I be better off getting a Linksys or other name brand router?

Can I replace the ATT modem or would I have to run the router between the Uverse modem and the network?

    Any advice will be appreciated.

You would have to replace it.

It doesn't say in the specs, but it has a 4port switch, so it must be a router also.
You can't have 2 modems in a series, and then you would have 2 routers to contend with.

I can't speak for quality though, but isn't it free?

IMO, either run your current modem (if you like it and it works ok) and get a second wireless n router or try the Motorola and see if it works ok for you and your needs and if not tell them you want something else. You don't have to change modems just to get Wireless N connectivity. You could add a second modem or a Wireless N AP.

Or just get a cheap wireless N card for the pc, and connect through that, if it is always on. Set it up as an AP. You really wouldn't need the faster connection just for the phone, I think.

3801 has it's own issues where the wifi just stops working after too many wifi devices connected...like 25 or something. Get your self a wireless router to put behind the 2wire, turn off wifi in 2wire, turn off DHCP in your router.

The 2wire 3801 is a RG setup for VDSL which can provide IPTV, VOIP and HSIA where the Motorola is a IPDSLAM modem providing HSIA only.

Do you have Uverse TV also?

No, I just have 24Mbps internet. I'm not having problems with the 3801 but the motorola has wireless N.

This page has me apprehensive about the Motorola.

My service is fiber optic to the node (one block away) with copper twisted pair to the house.

Is IPDSLAM and HSIA good for that?

Stick with the 3801 and get your own wifi router. The connections at the Cross Box are different for IPDSLAM than they are for VDSL and you would have to wait for a Tech to come out and switch over...if they <ATT> will even do that.

Once you get the router, I can guide you on how to set it up for wireless access point or you can follow the instructions on the link you provided.
