    Delayed Write Failed

I have two computers only a few feet apart. Both running Windows XP with latest updates, 4GB memory, some form of SATA drive (not sure what speed). I am on a Netgear WRN2000V3 router and we're connected via wire.

I want to copy over files, because I have nowhere else to store things. I'm going to format my machine and install Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit. So, I made a container, put it on the other computer and I keep getting this message during file copying:

    "Windows - Delay Write Failed.

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \$Mft."

I have the files in an encrypted container (TrueCrypt) so nobody can mess with my stuff until I get them copied back.

Sometimes it finishes copying, other times I have to dismount and remount. Any ideas what to do? This will take me forever to copy over 300GB!

Should I go purchase a USB to USB bridge cable?

You would be better off buying an external hard drive.

I've never seen delayed write fail on anything but USB, so I'm not sure what to tell you here.

Well, I was trying not to spend any money... and I can't buy a drive, copy the files, and return the drive, because even though you can wipe your data good, I'm always worried.

I have an external drive now, but it's full.

I just tried to turn off enable write cache or whatever that setting is. We'll see if that helps. I'll also try to wait until my Girlfriend goes to bed and see if that works when she's not using the computer.

Weird that I see XP recognizes my hard drive as SCSI. No way it's SCSI! I've never owned or installed a SCSI in my life.

I have many computers that do that. It has something to do with the mother board and if it has Raid abilities. Don't sweat it.

No worries anymore. I picked up a Targus unit. No software needed. Plug in both computers up pops an app.. drag and drop files.

Not bad so far.. not one problem. Software is visible on my screen, but in notification icons on other computer so it doesn't bother anyone.

Software can drag and drop from My Computer, but you can also put stuff in the "dock". That's just a place in the software to drop.. kind of like shortcuts to file. Then drag them all from there to copy.

It also has built in synch if you want to synch two folders to keep them the same.

You can also auto copy Outlook file and IE bookmarks.

While I feel the unit is useful, how useful is it for $40? People really only need it once or twice in their life. After I use it once I'll never need it again and if I ever do need something I'm sure a faster one will be out by then.

At $40 bucks my evil side feels inclined to use it and return it saying it didn't work well. At $20 I'd 100% keep it.

I just thought I'd come back and say WOW.. whatever Windows 7 is on it's much faster transferring files back. I copied them over to my second PC, but going back after installing Windows 7 is MUCH MUCH faster.

Hey...just wanted to say that I see this all the time - but I do work for a network data storage manufacturer...

That basically means that there's a bad block on the disk, and that [as it says] it was unable to save the data... I won't go into details about how to fix it, as this particular issue has been resolved; at least as far as I read into the previous post...
I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...
Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...
