    Sunset = No Internet ???

Not here at home (obviously), but at work.

The Internet connection during the day is fine, even with all of the computers and two or three WiFi added in there is no real slow down. But after hours (with only one computer trying to actively use the internet), sometime around sunset, the connection to the Internet all but disappears. The modem self checks and pings various web sites fine. The router checks out fine, and the internal network is still up and running.

At first I thought it might have been just the weather that weekend. But the problem has been continuing for two weeks. I have been there when the problem happens. No difference in anything on the company end. So next I disabled the wireless (thinking that we were being used by one of the local kids), but that was no help. (It did get the dispatchers passed at me, though...). I have tried all that I can think of, resetting and powering on/off literally ever combination of hardware in the company.

The connection is DSL, and I was wondering if anyone here might have experience with similar effects involving a DSL connection. Could the weather effect the line so that it now (after the storm) only work during day? If so, why can I still get the modem to ping no problem, but then not load that site in any web browser? Note that two hours earlier that same day the site was loading and downloading fine.

My boss is not having this effect him directly, but my own work, and the dispatchers who depend on web based mapping and tracking, are getting really hosed by this.

Do the lights on the modem go out when this happens?
At what point does the problem do away? Is everything fine in the morning?

I've been putting off getting Time Warner back out to the house... Last year they replaced "most" of the cabling because my router was rebooting due to the HEAT...Had weak signals on HAD tv channels...

Seems like there was a recent thread on this subject. OP ended up finding a cut in the line... Your problem could be a combo of the two..

    Hi Steve:

The lights on the modem for the 'connected to/power/blah' stay on, but the activity light (which during the day is almost always flickering) is out. Maybe once or twice a minute it might flicker, no maybe not...

Not sure at what time (exactly) the connection starts back up, but it is up and running by 8am every day (so far). That's when my boss gets in, and he would have my phone ringing off the hook if there was a problem with the connection.

I also tried to search for a similar thread before I started this one, going to have another look to be sure.

Thanks for the thought regarding the damaged line, will be trying to get a look at the line itself later.

Checked the wire from work to the pole, visually (from the ground) the wire is fine.

Boss agreed to get the service people out here Monday. Not my best weekend (month end and billing period end and... And no internet... AARRGG!!)

I have to say, it doesnt make a lot of sense, but as another member said, you need to check the cable. Other option is that there are problems at the ISP exchange over a period of days, that has been known before and they wont ring you up and tell you.

You know you can program many routers to have a time cut off. Maybe someone sneaked into the router and set a time cut off.

Or, bad wire outside and in the heat of the day or sunlight, it expands a wire or connections and it connects. When the heat, Sun, go away it stops expanded state and cuts off.

If it's a work connection and the ISP know this, they may cut the bandwidth in favour of home connections which use more internet at night.

It could also just be on a business hours package.
