Add 1 server in the home network, client unable connect to internet

    Hi,

First of all, I would like to describe my home network.

    INTERNET ---- ROUTER ------ CLIENT.

This is initially network and no problem so far.

Now I would try to add 1 server with Windows 2008 Server OS into the network.

    Currently network are like this.

INTERNET---- ROUTER ------- SERVER ------- CLIENT

And the server is already have DNS. Our configuration as below:

    Router
    IP : 192.168.0.1
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    DNS: 8.8.8.8

    Server
    IP: 192.168.0.205
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
    DNS: 192.168.0.1

    Client
    IP: 192.168.0.210
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.0.205
    DNS: 192.168.0.205

For the configuration, we are not sure whether correct or wrong, we need some guidance. However, these configuration , server side is able to access the internet but client unable to access the internet. We figure out the server do not share the internet service to the client, Can we know how does the server to share the internet to the client? Or any alternative way to allow the client access to internet.

    Hi,

I think I understand what you've done; it looks like you're trying to use two NIC ports on the server and use ICS or ISA for things....but you'd be better off just adding a switch into the network...

Internet --> Router --> Switch --> all devices on network

Let us know whether that would be suitable, but I know it would work..
I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...

Yeah are you using ICS to share out the internet connection from 2k8?

    Hi,

I appreciate your reply. I had learn something here. However, I didnt use neither ICS nor ISA. I stay same with the current network design, but change the dns server ip same as default gateway. After that, server side, I add those google domain into server dns option under server manager. And it is accessible to internet from client side.

However, many thanks from every replied here. I will take deeper research for ICS or ISA and replied here once I get result.

No you dont need to use ICS, we were asking if you were. The forums make it hard to do a proper network diagram.

    Glad you got it working

I understand the approach was suggest from Nude_Lewd_Man, this approach we had using all the way. Definitely it work correctly. But now we want to try new things. we install the server into the network, and this server would help to manage the traffic within internet. This server also provide DHCP, DNS, Routing, Firewall, Filtering and etc. Just like what the router doing. All the clients accessible internet would through this server.

If you're going to use your server as an ISA server* then you would need to have a rule for each direction of traffic - and for each [protocol] port used...so allowing :80 in both directions for web browsing, for example...
