Broadcasting home cable while living in temporary apartment

*EDIT* Both my house and apartment have internet access, but only my house will have cable TV. The goal here is to get cable TV in my apartment, using my internet connection in my apartment to access cable at my house. *EDIT*

I currently live in my parents old house. For the next 5 months, I will be renting an apartment 75 miles away from my house, while I complete my final year in school. I am looking into signing up for internet service in my apartment, but would like to avoid a cable payment if possible.

I currently subscribe to a cable+internet package with a different provider at my house, and was curious if i could connect my home cable to a private server, and access my home cable from my apartment while i will be away.

For this, I figure i will need a tv-tuner for my pc, which i already have. I have a server in my house which is currently being used as a videogame server, running windows server 2008, that i figure i could use to host my home cable service.

I am seeking advice in getting this done, as well as any red flags that i may want to watch out for as i try and work this out. I am curious if there exists an application of some sort that could help me out here. I do have a little bit of experience with Ubuntu Linux if that platform would better suit this task.

Anyways, thank you for your time!

To my knowledge, not a chance.

Without internet access, of some kind, it is impossible.

The cheapest way, is dial up, or maybe a neighbor, with wireless, for a small fee.
I'm not advocating using it without the neighbors permission, even though there are good arguments, for using someones un-incriped wireless.

If you find a way, let me know, so I can connect, my cottage 200 miles away, to my home network.

Due to the fact that i am dealing with two different cable companies, it is not possible for me to transfer cable/internet contracts from one place to another, and canceling my houses internet plan comes with a huge cancellation fee.

    Thanks for the reply!

Take my response with a grain of salt as I've never messed with TV tuners and live cable. But you could in theory, setup the server with live TV running and then remote in via something like TightVNC and view the screen on the server or you could setup the server with the tv tuner to capture video like a dvr and then do something like this

VLC has the built in features to act as a media streaming app as well

You might even be able to live stream TV that way, I'm really not certain.

edit: In fact right there in the details about setting up remote streaming it says you can do it. So my guess would be assuming that you have a compatible TV tuner and decent internet on both ends you could do it just fine.

That remote media streaming feature is something new to me, I just ran across it not long ago and haven't really had the chance to test it out much. But reading the details it looks like it should be exactly what you need. So assuming you have the software WMP/W7 on both machines you should be able to use it.

What I'd do before buying any new hardware is test it out with a video or music file first. Set it up, make sure it runs smooth and then buy a good TV tuner.

I think all you need is a slingbox. You can use it to stream cable tv to your remote pc.

He needs to be able to access it across the web though. I thought the slingbox was only meant for streaming on your local network??

edit: Err my bad, guess it does say "enjoy your very own home theater via the web" damn I need to read more often
