my router is giving me problems again
i had this problem about a month or two ago. i went back to the old post and did exactly what i did last time but i still can not get on line.
i am using the befsr41 router. i have dsl with earthlink.
i have tried different changes in the setup and still nothing.
in the control panel under networks it shows that it is connected.
when i enable pppoe i get (can not connect to pppoe server or pppoe authentication fail).
when i disable pppoe it doesn't connect.
i tried disabling dhcp and then enabling dhcp, and still nothing.
i am using win2k. i have 2 systems and a laptop connected to the router.
does anyone have any suggestions? i want to get off of this dial up.
don't worry i thought about throwing everything out the window already.

Use Smoothwall (www.smoothwall.org)

Much easier to configure
Sorry, had to say it - just got my Smoothwall box set up, and I'm feeling kinda smug.
Don't know much about hardware routers so I can't help I'm afreaid. Hope you fix it.
Cheers

You probably already did this...
Do you have Earthlink's software installed on your system as well? Linksys had this to say about getting the BEFSR41 to work with Earthlink DSL:
Also, assuming you have multiple machines hooked up here (otherwise why use a router??), can each machine see each other in a LAN setting? This means the problem usually lies within IP and DNS settings. With my router (BEFW11S4) for my DSL connection (MSN with Qwest) I had to enter specific DNS numbers to get my connection to the internet synched up between the router and the DSL modem (it needed it's own numbers and couldn't get the info automatically).Earthlink
If you have Earthlink's "WinPoet" or "Enternet300" software (PPPoE) installed on your computer/s you need to uninstall it. Click on your "Start" button, go up to "Settings" and then over to "Control Panels". Go to "Add/Remove Programs" and double click, find "WinPoet" or "Enternet300" and remove it.
Next, go to http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser. Leave username blank, enter "admin" for the password. Once in the set-up page, go down to "PPPoE" at the bottom of the page. Click "Enable" and enter your Earthlink Username and Password into the appropriate slots. Click on the "Apply" button and you are ready to go!
BTW, the network connection icon just means that the machine is talking to the router. The block is in the connection from the router to the modem. Also, DHCP is a setting that allows the router to dynamically assign IT'S OWN IP addresses to each machine connected to it, thus allowing it to manage the single one given to you by Earthlink. Leave this setting on unless you want to physically give each machine an address manually in the form of 192.168.1.xxx
Hope this helps, be sure to post with any other troubles!

have you tried resetting the router?
switch off your machines
take a toothpick or something similar and insert in the little hole on the front panel - hold for 20 secs or so
then fire up your machines and go into the web-based set up for the router
re-enter everything and try again
btw - did you do anything to the set-up before this happened - reg hack / mtu setting / reinstall/ new hardware?

i uninstalled all my systems from the router and just added the one and cleared out all the settings on the router and reinstalled them and now i am back up and running.
i have had this router for over a year and this is the second time in the last 2 months that this has happened.
i didn't change anything or add any new programs. all i did was turn the system off for about 6 hours and when i came home it wouldn't connect.
i'm starting to think that my service was down and they wouldn't tell me that when i called.
thanks for all the help.

I know this is a bit late (had to find the link), but it looks like most Linksys routers are having this problem. the thread can be found here.

Use Freesco. Much more stable than smoothwall, runs on anything, and is much easier to set up . . no extra stuph to install after you get it installed like with smoothwall, and it will run on a floppy!!

To tell you the truth, my Linksys router has these same troubles for quite some time. I usually had to reset the router about once every month or so. However, I upgraded the firmware for it using the downloads from Linsys' website. After that it never happened once! Just remembered that.

Yours is here
Maybe this will be of some help to you.

July 15th, 2002, 01:17 PM #15That's interesting squeech. I have to popo (power off/power on) my linksys about every 2 months. I haven't had to reset it yet. I've been too lazy to update the firmware. Perhaps its time.Originally posted by squeech

well it is down again. i am using the dial up on my laptop.
i hope i don't go over my 20 hours free.
i was here in techimo and i went to program my vcr and when i came back i couldn't go anywhere.
this is the second time this week that my router has gone out.
i reset, reinstalled all the information like i did the other day and under the status tab it shows that it is connected.
when i try to get on the internet no go.
what is going on now?
if and when i get connected again i will try the firmware update.
haven't had time to do that.

Why not reinstall the Winpoet or Enternet300 PPPoE software on one of your boxes. Disconnect the router from the DSL modem. Hook your box that has the PPPoE software directly to the DSL modem. Run it for a few days like this and see if your problem goes away.
This would eliminate your router as a possible source of problems. I've used this method at work a few times when no one could connect. I always found that the DSL line itself was down.
As a mater of fact when I set up the router at work, I never uninstalled the PPPoE software from my laptop. I did this so I could use it as a troubleshooting method. I've never had it cause problems when I connect to the DSL thru the router. Just don't start the PPPoE software if you don't need it. I did uninstall it from everyone elses laptop so they wouldn't become confused and try to use it and the router too.
