Help linking two computers over cable network...

Does anybody know how to get two computers that are both on the same cable service to talk to eachother. The catch is they are both behind cable routers that have built-in firewalls. I can ping the ip of the router but can't see anything past it. How do I get past the router. Any help would be appreciated.

Info:
D-link d-704 cable router
Netgear cable router
Both computers have XP Pro
Both routers use dhcp

Hmm, a possible solution would be to use a 2nd NIC in each machine to network the 2 using a crossover cable. I dont know if this method would work, but its worth a shot.

I think they're wanting to "share" stuff over the internet via their cable connection?

Since you're both behind firewalls, you could try "port forwarding" to the private IP address that you're cable router is giving your PC's.

The only thing is, that ANYBODY could get onto your machine through that port.

You could also try setting up an FTP server on each machine and allowing that port only, while only giving each other access. This would probably be the easiest and you could do it easily with an FTP application downloaded freely.

Yes, we want to share stuff, but I also want to be able to run a program that exists on one of the computers from the other computer. I guess I was hoping I could somehow map a drive or create a shortcut to the program. Can that be done by "port forwarding" and can you put a password on the port in order to access it?

"Remote Access" is what you're looking for. I'm on the same quest, two computers, two routers, two seprate locations. Let me know what you come up with, thanks, Dave.

i found that pc anywhere is a good way to get remote access to a pc and it has file transfer wizards although can get pricy. But if you are using XP u can setup remote desktop assistance to run the program but it is so slow. and there is no file transfer , although smalll files can be transfered through msn messanger while ur working both pc's hope that helps
