| Router problems
Hello, all!
I have a small home network setup with 2 pcs one Win XP and one Win 98SE. Both connected to a SMC Barricade 7004ABR Broadband Router on the LAN side and a Speedstream 5360 ADSL Modem on the WAN side. I have always been able to get into the configuration page, it has web-based configuration, but now I cannot get in.
I have tried IE 6.0, Netscape, Mozilla, Neoplanet, Opera, and some other browsers and still cannot get in. I have reset the router several times, reset Internet Explorer, unchecked all the proxy settings, and made sure firewall is off. I went to SMC's website and read all the FAQ's about my router, but I had tried all that. So now I'm stuck waiting for an email from tech support about it.
If anyone has any ideas to try, I'm willing.
Thanks, David |

It said it could not open connection to it. The address for it is 192.168.2.1 Port:88 for the admin page. |

Since it can not open the connection to it then it isn't listening on that IP address or port (note: 88 isn't the normal web port, but neither is 192.168.2.0 the normal range ).
Sounds like the problem is with the router or it's not using the IP & port you suspected. (unless you have a software firewall that is somehow interfering with your outgoing information). |

The manual for the router says that it defaults to 192.168.2.1:88 for the config page when it's reset. I had never changed the address, and I reset it, so it shouldn't be anything else.
I don't have a software firewall installed right now. I used to have ZoneAlarm but uninstalled that about 4~5 months ago, and just started having this problem about 2 weeks ago. |

| Normal is just relative anyway.
Just to clarify, did you try to telnet 192.168.2.1 88? If still no connection then the web service isn't listening as expected.
I'm running out of ideas so these may seem a little far fetched...
Is there a software/utility CD that came with the router you could try (it could commmunicate via a broadcast initated connection).
If your computer's IP address is something outside of the 192.168.2.0 /24 range then that could be the problem (but that wouldn't explain why you can ping it).
Are you able to use the router to get to the Internet? If not, maybe the cabling is faulty (but that wouldn't explain why you can ping it). |

Yes, I did try to telnet 192.168.2.1 88 no joy.
The software cd just has print server software and manuals on it.
The computer's ip addy is set via dhcp -- but right now it is 192.168.2.26
And I have tried cables I made, cables I bought and that doesn't help any.
I can still ping the router, though. So that's good. Not.
But, thanks for your ideas. |

Oh, BTW, I have to hook my dsl modem into the switch and connect via PPPoE directly to DSL to get on the internet. |
