Cybersitter and network problems

We have a small network where I work. We also have computers for kids that come in to use. The systems the kids use are not really computers more like internet appliances. No HD a stripped down linux install and all they can really use it for is internet access and as a word processor.
I had to prevent the kids from accessing porn. The problem was this machines have no hd and its linux that boots of a cd, so installing cybersitter or something similar would be difficult. No problem I just set up cybersittter on an old machine and a proxy server. Then I made all the Internet appliances to go through the proxy. This solution has workded for some time, but for some reason cybersitter is just letting the kids go anywhere they want. I don't think the problem is cybersitter, because I've tried other software to see if that solve the problem. Any suggestion?

Well, if you use IPCop or any linux distros as a firewall, there is a content filter called Dans Guardian that will do what you want. Not sure if it'll go on a standalone linux system, but it might. It does word content filtering as well as a site blacklist.
Check it out: www.dansguardian.org.

Hope this helps

Cheers
Mick

edit: Dunno about the proxy thing. Maybe your proxy settings have changed? Does it have a transparent cache?

I'm not sure about transparent caching. I just looked up what transparent caching is and I doubt it. But the proxy is doing what its suppose to do. I'm going to try and setup that linux machine. Thanks.

IPcop is a breeze to set up, and there are instructions for setting up Dan's Guardian on the site www.ipcop.org.

You can also set Dan's Guardian to only filter specific IP's, or exclude certain IP's from filtering. Very versatile, and logs can be added to the IPCop admin pages.

Have fun!

Cheers
Mick
