    150 k/s downloads, 49 second pings!

Ok, this is horrible. I finally got back to school, where we're connected through a LAN to a dual T1 setup. I tried surfing the web and it's all lightning fast (less than 2 seconds for any page at TechIMO). Downloads go between 75 k/s and 400 k/s (usually around 150). Ping times are usually pretty low to game servers (100 ms). But... any kind of chat program is dog slow!

At first I just thought AOL was being dog-slow about their servers on Instant Messanger. And since it didn't clear up for a couple days, I tried IRC in Linux. Half the servers would barely connect, and in those, I would ping myself and have it come back horribly slow. Attached is a snapshot of some times on nevernet.net.

What on earth is going on here? Why can't I text chat!?

Well, the guy in the conjoined suite from mine has the same problem, as have a couple other people.

He said people could connect more consistantly to the toc instead of the oscar aol server, so I ran a tracerout to both, and the delay to the oscar was greater, but not that much.

So I ran it again and got a 2 second, 4 second, 3.5 second delay before it got off campus, then a 3rd time and it came up with a bunch of !H

    ???

i am thinking firewall issues, if not on your pc, then on the LAN.
do you use a PPPoe connection to dial into your Universities bandwidth? what OS?

We're hooked up directly to the LAN, no dialing in involved.

I've tried mIRC in windows (98SE), AIM in windows, Xchat in RedHat 7.3 and gAIM in RedHat 7.3

I bleeped out the first couple just cause

yeah.. those speeds are HORRIBLY inconsistent lol

    66.871 ms 91.242 ms 56.714 ms
    58.416 ms 129.189 ms
then ya got a few of these little buggers...
    257.802 ms which is terrible...

#4 hop, probably a firewall.. that maybe a cause of some of it.. that thing goes from 10ms to 47ms.. to 74ms.. thats just crazy.
considering thats probably still on your lan it should be MUCH more consistent that that.. all 3 should be ~10ms I would think...
Helicopters don't fly; they vibrate so much and make so much noise that the earth rejects them.
