| My network connections in XP are $#@@$^!!
I have XP pro on 4 of 5 boxes.
Is there any way to get rid of all the networking history short of a reformat?
I somewhere made a mistake in the setup.. (who me? )
So now my router shows up on one computer as my gateway, but the others all say connected though unknown connection.
I think my network is really slowed by this. I have 100mbt cards in yet some computers say 3.5mbt connection.
My UD network score sux on all of them. I'm getting dial up scores with a cable modem. Am I making any sense to anyone?
I'm so tired of this I'm ready to start drooling on my foot because the lobotomy was a success! |

| Not sure what you mean surreal. Do you mean remove icons that show up in the My Network Places? Or are you primarily concerned with maximizing your network speeds? |

Maximizing my speeds, but I think there'a a problem because it referrs to my network connection as number 12 or 14 depending on how many times I've tired to get it set up right! Just doesn't seem like it should be that way! |

I have never used the XP networking wizard of which I think this relates to. The fact you have multiple entries may or may not matter (I'm not sure).
One quick way to roughly check the network speed is to ping. SO I would ping the gateway's LAN IP address. Then look at the resulting output for the TIME. If it is constant and below 10ms then that is relatively normal for a small LAN. If it varies or you even get any timeouts then there could be cable or NIC driver problems. |

Yep and the problem is with XP you really don't have a choice.
I did a clean install to try and clean it up and XP at boot with out even asking set the computer up on the network!
I'll ck the ping times thanks. |

| It's true!
Here's one, I just rebooted a computer (ok it was an accident, it did it on it's own when I put the side on the case! ) BUT!!
I pulled the network card out of that one the other day when it got sick and put a new Netgear card in, I deleted the old one, and when it gets shut down and then boots it installs the old one that's not there!!!
OMG it's just occurred to me what's going on!
I bet when I put my cd code in for XP when I installed it I made a mistake! Unwittingly putting in a code in error mind you that MS has deemed to be a bootleg code! If you don't upgrade to SP1 MS then sends out it's tentacles to all the computers in the world looking for this code.. Little ole me who must have made an honest error is now being driven insane by Bill Gates! Yes! that must be it! Bill Gates is personally up late at night dinking with honest hard working dyslexic people!!! J/K |

Uurgh. I hate the XP networking wizard. Never ever ever ever ever ever use it.
Typically when I redo my machine(s), I don't plug the network cable in. It will install the drivers for the card fine, just not set you up on some whack network that doesn't exist. So long as your router is set to DHCP, you should be able to (once Windows has finished installing) plug the network cable in and run ipconfig /renew and the DHCP server will pick up the card. I've never had a problem doing it that way. Yet.
On the other hand, I think I made that same code error, and I don't have any troubles... Maybe Bill likes me?? |
