| win 2k and networking problems with games
hey folks
is there any chance anyone can help me with this (probably simple) problem:
i have set up a network at home using 2 win2k machines
they can see each other in the workgroup- i can transfer files between the computers, i can print off a networked printer, but when it comes to games i have no idea..
can anyone explain to me how to set up the network so i can play games across it?
cheers |

It varies depending on the game. Generally you need one computer to [i]host] the game, and the others will join that game.
Most games require TCP/IP or IPX/SPX for the networking protocols. You may not have either of these setup but still be able to share files (via NetBEUI, another network protocol). WIth W2K, the default installed protocol is TCP/IP though.
Tell us a game that you are trying to play across your network and we'll gladly walk you through the details. |

I would just make sure both machines have TCP/IP and IPX installed on them.
Are you using either of these machines on the Internet? If you are not then go into TCP/IP and give them static addresses. Something like 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 .. that way you can make one machine the host and have the other machine connect to that address.
I will have to check when I go home what the options are for Battlefield 1942, I have not had a chance to play it multiplayer yet.

Battlefield 1942 only requires TCP/IP so you don't need to worry about IPX/SPX at all. You also don't have to use static IP addresses, but it can make some things easier (and some things harder). One initial note, if either of the Battlefield 1942 installations are using the "no-CD crack" then they will not be able to join other hosted games (without some special Host server files too; of which I don't know the details).
I don't remember the specific steps for this game but, I do have it at home. So if no one else gets you the details first, I can in about 8~10hrs.
