| need help setting up an FTP behind router
Hi there!
I'm new to this router stuff, but now I got one and I want to set up my FTP again, but it won't work. I used DNS2GO for a static IP until they charged their customers for money. Now I can't find another service for getting a static IP that works! Besides that I'm behind a router. Could that be the problem?
Happy about any suggestions of WORKING static-ip-services or helpful links and stuff.
Thanks in advance |

most routers have a DMZ host setting which you can set to have one IP address outside the router. Thats an option. Other than that you will have to enable port forwarding for your IP in the router and set you up a port(ex. 21) and then make sure your ftp software is also set for port 21. As far as static IP enabling software...I have never used such a proggie though im sure they exist.

I use http://www.dyndns.org for my host name resolution with a dynamic IP address.
After you setup the IP port forwardnig as sKiT mentioned, have teh connecting computers set the FTP client software to Passive mode if they still have trouble. |

Sorry, don't understand too much about forward port or whatever. Could someone please explain how to do it?
I telephoned with the company I got the router from and they told me that the router is produced solely for them in Taiwan, so there's no specification / model / type.
The only thing I can tell you is that the router is configured via Intedrnet-Explorer, by going to it's IP-address (192.168.7.1). In fact there are many settings to be made but I don't know which ones to change.
I use bulletproof FTP-server, if that helps you
Thanks for any help |

Howdy prohhh - Welcome to TechIMO!
Your router's web interface should have IP port forwarding as a setting - you can then set the ports for your FTP software to be forwarded to your FTP server on the LAN. FTP port you need to forward is probably 21, and maybe 2000 for passive FTP as well. BulletproofFTP should have this information in it's help files.
Cheers

When I enter the option of port forwarding in my router configuration it asks me some things I don't know, perhaps one of you does.
it says: Index 1
Protocol: both, TCP, or UDP (which one to choose?)
Public Server: open typing field (what to enter?)
Port Number: _____~______ (what to enter?)
Server IP Address: 192.168.7.___ (what to enter?)
thanks in advance, I think I nearly have it now |

Ok, let me try those:
Use TCP only
Public server is probably the network address of your connection (I think - not 100% sure on that one) - check bulletproof's help file
Port number at a minimum is 21~21 (FTP listens on port 21 standard - check bulletproof's help files to check if it needs any other ports as well)
Server IP address would be the address of the machine with Bulletproof on it - run IPCONFIG command in a DOS box on that PC and check your address.
I think that's it.
Cheers

| thanks up to here but I'm still not sure
if this works:
I entered a port forwarding routine in my router configuration.
ports 20&21 are now forwarded to the right PC in the network, but the config asks me about the "Public Service" with an open typing field. What shall I enter there?
The other fields should be filled in correctly:
protocols: TCP/UDP or only TCP (I tried both)
ports 20~21
server-IP: 192.168.7.2
only problem is Public Service-field
does anyone know what to enter there? I have a dynamic IP that means it changes everytime I go online. I still can't get static-ip-software to run with my router. Now I entered my static IP (which probably doesn't work; it's prohhh.d-ip.de), but nothing happens
thanks in advance |

Some routers have an option for dynamic DNS (what you are reffering to) in the setup.
