| Help, I need help..really bad
Here is the deal: My PC, around 1 week ago, started getting high pings on servers, you know? around 300, and my family is paying for AT&T broadband. This can get frusturating. now im getting pings on some games as high as 999 and, now I can never find any servers on the internet "This page cannot be found" sort of stuff. When i click anywhere, its like I didnt actually click there, because its un-responsive. When i first go on the net, its fine, then 10 sec. later, I cant find a single Web Page. Here is the odd thing. At our house, we have one huge network. I have the only PC, and one Mac, but we have a bunch of other macs. The mac is wireless, and connects fine, at least on the internet. My PC is a direct connection. They are all hooked to the same modem through a router. a cable modem. my father seems to have no problems, and my mac, for the most part, is fine.(although, on Starcraft, it said my connections were so slow that i couldnt play games, just chat) MY PC, is giving me h**l. i contacted AT&T 5 times. on the chat, they werent helpfull at all. through e-mail, they told me they detected no traces of trouble in the Salem, Oregon area. that, and the fact that my Mac doesnt really have connection problems, has lead me to believe that its the way my PC is connected. Could someone help me with figuring this out, or tell me if im wrong? i really suck when it comes to networking |

What OS on the PC and what setting in TCP/IP?
Try another cable as suggested , and if that don't help then it could be configuration. Any firewalls loaded on the PC?
Sorry for all the questions: I know ya wanna fix it, but we need to know where to look!
Cheers

no, no, its ok, i like questions. well: the macs are all wireless, using the Airpost Basestation, a Mac only thing . The PC is using CAT 5 cable. The airport and CAT 5 cable are connected downstairs to the cable modem, where my father's computer is also hooked up. The PC is running XP Home, and i DO have a firewall, ill have to check the settings on that....its called Zone alarm. im very bad when it comes to networks(i have tried to find a book, but never could), so how do i check the TCP/IP connection? soorry about the questions my mac is running MAC OSX, but that is irrevelent |

Zone Alarm could be the issue. Try disabling (do NOT attempt to uninstall it at this stage - that could be bad! ) it by right clicking the tray icon and selcting disable. Then try surfing the net and see if it helped. If it does, you need to configure ZA to let IE through without problems. If it doesn't we'll need to delve a bit deeper.
Also, what version of ZA (should be under Help in the menus).
Cheers

ping the router and see what times you get
goto start
run
type command
then ping 192.168.1.1
and see if your response times are slow.
also what router are you using and do you have the newest firmware update? |

Also, is XP Homes firewall on? That might conflict with ZA (not sure, but it might).
Right click the network icon in the tray, and select properties or some such (can't recall right now). Somewhere in there (?advanced tab?) is a setting for the firewall for XP. Turn it off for now.
Cheers
