Anyone have any tricks for when the FAT table becomes messed up on a windows 98 hard drive? I see the folders as file icons and some of the folders show up, but the files are in a format which is not readable. |

Shut down all unnecessary programs and run scandisk. That should reconcile the FAT with the actual contents of the drive.
Not really sure if that's going to fix your problem or not though. Let us know if that worked after you run Scandisk.

there are two copies of the fat...one is keep as a backup in case system corruption occurs.
if you are seeing the windows desktop, and already ran chkdsk /f & scandisk, then there's not much left short of using a utility like norton to try to piece together your files. and keep in mind, the success ratio of using these tools to recover that data will vary... |

Chkdsk /f tried to recover, but said it some of the windows files could not be corrected. Scan disk went through and did not find anything. |

Boot up with a DOS boot disk. Make sure FDISK is copied onto it.
After you boot up with the boot disk type FDISK /MBR
It's worth a shot anyway.
It still works under WinNT, 2K and XP so give it a try.
