Anyone here using Port Forwarding with a Netgear RT314 Router?

I am beginning to think that the port forwarding in a Netgear RT314 Router does not work. I was unable to get an FTP Server working over the Internet that I had working on my LAN with the FTP Port 21 forwarded to the FTP Server. Now I cannot seem to get Logitech's Instant Messenger Video Companion to work either and I have forwarded the ports to my PC that it uses also with no luck.

Anyone here using the Port Forwarding on a RT314 Router? and was there a trick to get it to work?

I downloaded the latest firmware and romfile from Netgears website and still a no go.

I found a website that said I could Telnet into it and mess with the default firewall settings but it wont seem to accept the Telnet connection.

I just wanna make sure I am doing this right never really messed with Telnet very much:

I typed "Telnet"

It gives me a prompt:

Microsoft Telnet>

so I type:

Open 192.168.0.x

Which is the LAN IP Address of my router and I get....could not open a connection to host: Connect failed

Any ideas?

Yeah, I've got that exact model of Router and it was about the best thing you could get for a SOHO back in it's day. Can't say that I've ever upgraded my firmware though.

Have you tried pinging the router yet? You need to make sure you have a valid network connection before you do anything else.

Port Forwarding with this model of router should be no problem either. It doesn't have a nice gui interface to make the configuration changes but I think you can make just about any change to it you'd like. So far as I remember about the only weakness this model had was that it didn't do too well when you had mupltiple people connected to the router trying to play the same online game at one time. I think that was more of NAT issue though than a problem with the router itself..

Oh, and the IP number you should be using is 192.168.0.1 unless you've changed it in the settings.

ok I was able to Telnet to the router from my wifes PC but it wont let me from my PC hmmm....We are both running Win2k. I can ping the router from both PC's, I have internet access on both PC's also. I cannot seem to get port forwarding to work for FTP or for IM Video companion which uses ports 80 and 8080.

WOOT! I think solved all my problems

I uninstalled ZoneAlarm since I was not using it anyways and it appears that even though I wasnt using it, it was still causing a conflict somewhere as I can now use my IM Video Companion and Netmeeting for Video chatting with my friend Gonna have to go back and setup my FTP Server again and try that one too
