Question
Who has Satellite Internet? Do you like it?

I've always heard that the ping rate is way too high on satellite for gaming. I'd like to hear it from "the horse's mouth though". Custompccases says that he had satellite, and his pings were better than when he was on dial-up. Anyone else have good pings? How good are we talking? Do you have satellite download/dial-up upload? Or do you have two-way satellite? And what do you think about it? Any help is greatly appreciated......Brian

I had satalite with europe-online a few years ago the pings were terible, i mean over 1000ms was common, dont forget you modem sends a request to the service provider via the internet then or which ever webserver you requested info off then it has to be sent to the satallite which in turn sends the request to your dish.
if you can't get dsl/cable/even wireless then i would say satallite will be your last option

for $89.00 a month, satallite should be blazing fast...it isn't.

$89!! Holy crap! I guess the satellite companies know that if you're going with them, then you probably can't get DSL/cable/wireless, so they know they've got you by the...uh...well, they've got you right where they want you!

Dont even think about gamming with satelite it sucks. I have DirecWay 2 way. Its a lot better than dialup for everything but gamming. I had better luck gamming with a 56k modem than I do on the dish now.

My friend has satellite @ 2.5Mbit/s!

As fsanda mentioned, don't even bother with gaming - for him, it's worse than 900ms :O

I have a friend in the middle of no-where trying to conduct a business using satellite, she finally went back to her old trusty dialup...

With sattilite, youy have a very long delay built in (1-2 seconds) which is no good for gaming. It may be ok for web browsing etc, but DSL/ISDN would probally be just as good IMO, only with less bandwidth

I'm anguishing over this..
It is a huge monetary commitment and now that I see the fact that there is a cap on traffic I'm even more concerned..
I will have no choice other than dial up or satellite.
I have to make a choice in the next few days.
Brian, did you end up going with satellite?

No, I didn't. It didn't sound so good to me. I talked to my cable company again the other day. This time they said that we should have high-speed cable internet here around June or July. I'm praying!
