    Where's the IP address?

I know in Win98, I can run "ipconfig" ; WinME doesn't like that, since it doesn't really support DOS.
I can run BelArc Advisor and find it.(I'm on cable modem, so the IP address is dynamically assigned, so Windows System Info just says 0.0.0.0).

What is the easiest way to find out my IP address? In win98SE,
    WinME, and WinXP?

I need to know this so I can try to run PC Anywhere, to access my Dad's PC. Thanks.

Ahh! That's the ticket! Thanks, jw.
I thought the IP address was re-assigned, being dynamic an' all,
but how often? Or does it change the "Default Gateway" IP address? Thanks.

The lease period is up to the scope set on the DHCP server. I think ISP's usualy set the lease period for 24hours, but usualy you will always end up getting the same IP adress.

    Happy New Year Bill.

How often your ip gets renewed depends on the server that you got it from. I've never a network where the "Default Gateway" is dynamic. I'm not sure how such an arrangement would work.

ipconfig works for XP and 2000. You do it from a command prompt avaible by typing cmd from the run box in the start menu.

You need to go to start, run and type in cmd. This will get you to a DOS window. Then type in ipconfig. You can also use the ipconfig command with /all and it will show you a lot more information.

So, can I assume that "ipconfig" is a DOS command, and "winipcfg" is a Windows variant to access the same info?

    Cat:
You didn't steal the topic - I'm interested in finding this information for all Windows OSs.

Happy New Year to you, Shawn:
Since I looked at my IP address after midnight, that might be the reason it hasn't changed yet - maybe it runs 24 hrs. from midnight to midnight. . .I'll see when it changes. Are dial-up ISPs "dynamic" as well, I wonder?

    WB: That's what I got in WinME. . .

And thanks jman and JR for the info.

Yes dial-up connections are assigned IP's dynamically. Broadband is too but since your modem is always on when the renew date comes up it keeps the same IP. There are a couple of different ways to get a new IP if you are using broadband. You could call up tech support and have them do it. You could buy your own modem. I know my friend left his modem off for a day or two and when it came back on line it was assigned a different IP. I have had my cable connection for almost 2 years now and I have only had 3 different IP's. Makes it nice when I setup some services and such on my router. I also use a dynamic IP service which is OK. There are a few different ones. The one I use is http://www.no-ip.com.

Thanks for the info, JR. That all makes sense. So you're more apt to get a changing IP address on a dial-up vs. the "always on" cable modem. . .I think I might be starting to understand - lol.

My Comcast/cable/Win2k box has a lease untill 2003 it says. Dial up will assign any address available as needed. Not a good way to get a static ip. a way to get your ip address is from www.grc.com they have several ways to see your address.Look on the leak test page.http://grc.com/freepopular.htm
