| Wireless network problem...
Hello! I've got a SMC 7004VWBR router and two pcs and a network printer hooked directly into router. Both pcs and printer can connect and get on the internet. But, I just got my laptop, and it's got built-in Wi-Fi. I've setup my router for wireless, and the laptop "sees" and connects to "Nighthawk" (SSID of router), but I cannot ping the router or the pcs.
I've tried with 128-bit WEP, and without, but still can't get online or ping the other computers.
Any help or ideas are appreciated...
Thanks!

Some initial thoughts:
Are you getting a valid IP address on the wireless client?
If not:
Check to ensure MAC filtering is set correctly on the SMC 7004VWBR router. It could be enabled but not have the wireless NIC's MAC on the ACL.
The SSID is normally case sensitive, ensure same upper/lower case is used at the laptop.
Ensure you first use the latest drivers for the wireless NIC and not any OS default drivers.
Perhaps a firmware change on the SMC 7004VWBR router is in order (try newest firmware first). |

I'm going to d/load the latest firmware update for the router.
I don't have MAC filtering enabled, but will double-check it anyway...
How can you update the driver, if you can't get on the internet? j/k, I'll hook up the CAT 5 cable and be d/loading the driver.
I'm not getting a DHCP IP from the router via wireless. The LAN port is "autoconfigured", though it's not hooked up yet.
How do I change my Default Gateway in Win XP?
Thanks for the quick replies, and I'll let you know what happens...

Change default gateway with TCP/IP properties in the LAN adapetr under Network Connection. It should be in the list when you open the LAN connection properties.

Updated the firmware and still no go...
I'm getting ready to try it with WEP off, but I still can't ping the router...
I still need to know how to change the default gateway to my router's IP. Also, is there a way to turn on DHCP for the wireless adapter?
Thanks! |

With WEP off, you may get the IP info and the connection may work.
You shouldn't have to change the default gateway manually. Especially if it is workig correctly for the wired clients. Unless you found a way to specify otherwise, the wireless clients will be treated the same as the wired clients for DHCP services. |

OK, I figured out why I couldn't see the settings I was familiar with... In the Network Properties, all the connections were "bridged". I "un-bridged" them, and now I can set my default gateway, and we'll see what happens...

Hey, it works now!! I manually set the gateway, even though I probably didn't have to... But, it's working now with 128-bit WEP on, and I'm getting pings on average of 2-3 ms...
Thanks alot guys!
