    Question 98SE P2P question

Here's the setup. I have a couple of machines linked with a crossover cable. Previously, one was a laptop running Win ME. The other is a desktop running 98SE. In order to get the two to see each other, I had to run some sorta Networking assistant from the ME package, and put it on the 98SE machine.

I just got rid of the EM laptop and got a newer one with 98 SE on it. Hooked everything back up, put in the appropriate protocols and naming, did the sharing stuff on the new laptop, but neither machine will see the other.

I'm wondering if that Networking Wizard I had to run on the 98SE Desktop machine somehow is screwing this up. I don't se any way to undo it, and the ME machine, along with the OS disk is gone. Opening up Network Neighborhood in each machine only shows that particular machine.

What stupid thing am I missing, or is this old ME Networking Assistant thing fouling things up?

Maybe run the ME thing on the new computer.

A thought, but then I run th erisk of the laptop not seeing the main network.

In the meantime, I did put th elaptop on the main network and everything's fine at that end.

On the desktop, I deleted all the protocols and the NIC. Then I put it all back in again, and the thing chased it's tail on the NIC installation (3Com 905TX), but eventually went in. Tried changing th workgroup name, all kinds of stuff. I changed cables, tried using a hub, etc., etc. After I deleted and reinstalled everything, the machine won't even see itself in Network Neighborhood....

Are both cards full duplex? I had a problem like this when 1 card was not full duplex and one was.

(you may want to set them both to a common setting.)

I'll give that a try, Wiz. I'm gonna change out the NIC in the desktop too. As much trouble as that thing gave me going back in, I'm wondering if it didn't fritz out. I have a couple of Intels here that are generally better behaved with Win98 and a lot easier to manage, so I'll throw one of them in and check the duplexing on both.
