Ok I have a Linksys Router with a cable modem in one building, in the other building a Wireless Linksys Router, both have same exact features other then the wireless part in one. I'm trying to have one computer on the Wireless end on the domain of the other end. I have a server built, with a domain and DNS set up on it. Now the problem is, is to get the routers to communicate so the one computer can log into the domain. Any ideas??? |

so your trying to have the wired router connect to the wireless router?
if so buy an accesspoint for the wired router. |

The routers should be able to communicate with each other. I shouldn't need an accesspoint |

okay maybe you missed something out then
cause a wired and a wireless can't communicate with each other unless there directly hooked up to each in some form or shape. |

The regular router would have to be hooked into the wireless or visa versa, unless the other router also has wireless capabilities then the 1st wireless router cannot hook up to it without a ethernet cable plugged directly from it to the regular router. |

Routers communicate with each other. They do not need to be connected with cables. They use the internet for communication with each other. My question was how to point the routers to each other using the IP Address as you would with any other network, using Cisco Routers, Netgear Routers, 3COM Routers etc.... Big Business have multiple offices where they use multiple networks and all offices are connected to each other. That is done by Routers, Bridges, Switches, Hubs etc. All I wanted to do was connect my house to my partners house, so that we can share databases with each other and be in them at the same time. I guess I'll just have to find out the answer to this 2-morrow.. Thanks for the ideas! |

In case you didnt know, the internet is cables/fiber/radio connecting routers. Its not a mythical thing that just exsists and packets float across it.
What you are looking for is a VPN, which most likely your routers arent capable of doing on their own. You will have to use a VPN from one of the computers attached to each router and some funky routing to make the 2 networks see each other. It isnt going to be a simple setting you turn on somewhere, it is going to take some thought and planning. Big business uses leased lines or VPNs to do this. |
