Very basic wireless router question

Ok, ignore the ignorance here.

If I have a wireless router, does that function the same as a wireless access point?

I already have a wireless 802.11b pc card for laptop...so if I had the wireless router would I be able to go from the cable internet service to the router to my wireless pc card??

WHat is the main difference between a wireless router and a wireless access point?? I assume that an access point doesnt do any routing....but does the wireless router do everything the access point does??

The router in question is a dlink DI-614+..evidently has a built in switch also.

Thanks, JP

Most wireless routers have hardwire network built in to them. The router uses NAT to share out the internet. so you can share out internet thru hardwire LAN and the wireless part.

the access point is used to make an available network have wireless support. just plug it in to a router/hub/switch and presto you have wireless capabilities.

So if you have a wireless router and a wireless card they will work together as long as its a router that supports B

I would recommend to the wireless router if you looking into sharing off your internet

Generally it does, but not always. Some WAPs allow you to bridge them together wirelessly to easily extend the coverage range.
