There's all kinds of programs out that you can use to schedule a shutdown of the PC after a specified period of time...

when i went to thailand, a buddy and i stopped in to see the CS junkies at work there, and decided to take them to school. (killed all 80 of em in JK2) when we got there, they gave us a card that "guesstimated" when we got there [i.e. 2:23 would be 2:30] and told us to go get a computer that we pleased (except that he told us in a language we never would have understood... lol)
so we played as long as we wanted to, and when we were done, before we could walk out, we had to walk past the desk, give him our card, and he charged like a buck an hour, and if we did like 15 minutes over an hour, he charged us... yeah, a quarter. wooo that was hard. so we could go get blasted all day long to wretchedly loud gaming for 5 hours... for 5 bucks.
worked for them

If the machines are running windows, you could set up a server and give each member an account that is set to a timeout. (You can do this in policy editor) that will log the user out after so long and cancel the account.
If you don't want to use a PDC, you could run a telnet server or something on the machines and send this command to shut it off:
The n can be a number (0, 1, 2, 4, 8) this is what they stand for:Code:rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx n
0 - LOGOFF
1 - SHUTDOWN
2 - REBOOT
4 - FORCE
8 - POWEROFF
Force just kills everything, you can combine these numbers an' all.
It might be a thought to send them a NET SEND message or summat first before you shut off their machine though._____

Wouldn't forcing the computer to shutdown with applications open screw up the file system in the long run?

No that won't corrupt Windows. You're forcing the PC to do a normal shutdown.

Just yank the power to the switch/hub. No danger to the PC's and instant LAN party death. Use a light timer if you would like.
Another thought is to charge for the time in blocks of 30 min to an hour. That way you dont end up bickering over 5 min. This may sound harsh, but it is a business.....

Yeah, cutting of the ethernet would do the trick. Maybe give them a NET SEND to warn them, then march over there and either get more money or throw them out.

well, there is a new lan party place near me and i think the guy has a new setup. Every person that comes in has their own account(lastnamefirstinitial). If you pay for an hour you have an hour to play before you get logged off

The LAN place near my house, Lanwerx (www.lanwerx.com) uses some proprietary program that'll log you off if you stay too long. I haven't been there for a while so I don't recall exactly what it's called. I'd imagine they would tell you if you asked.

Wow, that's a lot of information to process, but it will all be put to good use. Thanks a ton. I usually preferred NVIDIA cards in the past as well. My bias was less educated, naturally, but I...
