| How to setup an FTP server?
I want my computer to run as FTp server so I can save information for the BF1942 team at clanimo and have them be able to log in and download whatever they need.
What I need to know is what would be the best program, right now I have smart FTP, but don't know if it can be an FTp server, and what ports I will need to forward on my firewall, if any.
Also can I have the FTP server running while playing a game? The server doesn't need to be dedicated does it?
Thanks

You didn't mention you firewall/router type, but here is a good place to start: http://www.linksysftp.org/
FTP servers require relatively little system resources other than bandwidth, so you should not need a dedicated system.

bulletproof is a great prog
what kind of connection you have?
ifs its something with a lot of bandwidth and your not upping huge amounts of data you should be cool with running it with the server |

Also remeber that you can use HTTP if they are just getting files. You can use free hosting space for that.

Agreed Siliconjunkie, but he will need to set directory restrictions, as I believe he plans to limit access to just ClanIMO members. They are already hosting HTTP downloads at ClanIMO via a php script for their CMS, so I believe this is a different download server project.
What's the word Biz, how do you plan on using the FTP services? |

Well, I use Serv-U, and it works great under windoze. Which ports you need to forward will depend on what program you use and how you set it up; most use port 21, but can also use many others in some programs. Some routers don't seem to allow you to forward port 21, so bear that in mind if it doesn't work too well.
You need an always on connection and an always on PC as the FTP server of you want others to be able to get files from it anytime (remember there are timezone differences, so not just when you are awake if you want Aussies to use it. ). Of course, if it's only for you and a few friends, that doesn't matter so much if you tell them only to use it at certain times.
Another thing to consider is domain name resolving. If you want to use a domain name you have like me.com, and your internet IP is dynamic, you'll need to use a service like dyndns.org to alias your dynamic IP to a static hostname.
Anyhow, hope you get what you want working OK.
Cheers

Last time i tested my connection about 2 weeks ago was 2200down/400up. Its a pretty good connection.
I will need to be able to let people upload, and download stuff off of the server. I plan on doing some in game filming, and if someone wants a clip for some of the movies we make, then they can just go and download it off of my server. or if they have a clip that they want me to edit, they can put it on my computer. Also I will save files like maps for the games, and strategies guides that i write if i ever write any. It will mostly be used for clan related stuff. Also if I ever wanted to share a file with someone, for example, i shared my music video that i made, with one of the clan members, but I had to upload it to his server. I think it would have been a lot easier for him to be able to download it to his main comp and not his server.
Also my comp runs 24/7, so there will be no problem with people getting files off of it, unless it crashes.
I am useing a Linksys 4 port router/firewall.

I wanted to get an FTP server up and running but I only have 256 up.. (That's what the flyer said anyway. )
Most people normally can't get more then 8-12 kb/s
Maybe if I go on vacation I can leave a server up.. |
