Cable connection
Hey guys, I just recently bought a cable conneciton and I want to split it so that the other guys in the house have internet access as well. But I do not know if I should buy a hub or a router? Which would be better, but mind you, i could careless about firewall and all that crap and i'm looking to go cheap as hell. I have 3 computers (including mjyself) that will be connected. Help would be great!
Thanks!

a router is what you will need. a hub will not do unless you purchase another ip address
i would go for a linksys. btw the firewall is built in so you get it no matter what
but you want something cheap

Router, so basically how would I hook that up with the cable connection coming from the host computer?

excuse the terrible diagram:
cablemodem=========router=====pc

pc
you can usally add up to 254 pcs if you wish
They can be had at Frys for 30 bucks if you arent pickey about brand and features.
/edit
The other pc should be below the router not the cablemodem

so the cable modem would go to the router directly instead? Because for cable don't you have to have a computer that is always on to "host" the connection?

the router has a WAN port on the router that the cable modem plugs into. As for the always on the router will take care of the "always on" so even if you have all the computers are off the cable modem connection is still active. so turn on the computer and presto internet is ready to go

With a router there is no need for a PC to host or share the connection.
What to you mean by 10 and 100? If you mean 10Mbit vs 100Mbit in most cases you will only get 1-2 from the modem so it really doesnt matter much.

ok also, here is a good question, the cable modem stems out of 1 of the 3 bedrooms. However, it does not come out of my bedroom but the person's room that it does come out of isn't too network/computer smart. However, since the cable itself hosts "Tv cable" we had attachments added onto the cable so that it could go to all three rooms. Now, if I take the cable modem and just have it setup in my room would it make any significant speed difference?
Example
<cable>----<splitter)==========2 cables split to each room
Does this seem it would work?
<cable>----<splitter)---(my line with cable extension)-----<my room>------<<router>>=========(other 2 PCS)

It all depends on how good your signal is. Time Warner here wants it on the first split. Luckly with the router there really isnt anything that someone can do to mess it up except unplugging it, no buttons or such to mess with. I just sits there and works.

ok then, so basically with the router, everyone has the same connection and i'll be able to download (pay for) music, movies, etc... at resonable rates

i have my cable modem in my mothers room and she has a tv card in her computer. i use a splitter to get the cable modem and tv turner card with out slow down.
you will have to watch out on peer to peer progs. if everyone has on there upload to unlimited you will have a very hard to doing gaming if everyone is uploading at once.
usually most cable companies give you 15 - 35 k upstream. that can used very quicklyLast edited by GroundZero3; May 22nd, 2003 at 09:36 AM.

I'm the only one in the house out of the 3 that downloads anything, the other two just use it for AOL.

Yeah, be on the lookout for bandwidth hogging roommates. P2P will quickly eat it up. If I saturate my upload it all goes to pot.

well heres the deal, I am the only one that uses P2P, the other two are pretty much clueless (for the most part). Even when I do use P2P, i very rarely have anyone ever try to upload off of me, so usually it's just me going around downloading to my hearts content. So with that in mind, the connection should be pretty strong still for the most part correct?

yes it all depends on the ISP and how they are running things

thanks appreciate it, yah I just recently got a call from Comcast, stating that they just finished putting in the cable and they wanted to know if we wanted it, I said hell yah since all we could get was dialup, phuck that, so on our street we are probably the only ones with cable connection, which is pretty nice.
