wireless setup question

ok here is what i want to do . i have cable and a home network set up by wire . i want to add wireless so i can hook up a pc out in my garage in a room i am setting up a work shop in . i don't want to wire it because the modem for the cable is to far to string cable , well be to much of a hassle to to do it rather .

without getting another ip address can i get a wireless hub ? do they make such a thing ? or will i have to get a wireless router ? can i have a wired and wireless router ? can i hook up the wireless out from the router i am useing now ?

thanks for your time .

What you need is a Wireless Access Point (basically a wireless hub that connects into your existing network). You said you have a router, so I assume it has network ports to attach PC's to? All you do is connect the Wireless Access Point into one of the routers network ports, and then set it up. It should then allow cable signals as well as network signals to be sent to any wireless devices (you'll need a wireless NIC in the remote PC, of course).

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers
Mick

ok so i have a router that goes straight into a hub . 3 pc's are hooked up to that hub and a line goes back to my son's room where there is another hub ,4port, with his pc and a line going to the back bedroom to the last pc . so i could hook the access point into that hub ? it is the closest room to wher i wan;t to put the pc that will be wireless. or does it have to go directly into the router ?

also any recomendations ? want something good but i was " born a pooo black child " so not something that cost big bucks .

hahaha for those that don't get that it is from the steve martin movie "the jerk "

I'm not 100% sure but I think you can plug the WAP into any hub point, provided that hub is eventually connected to the router. My LAN has hubs which all connect to a software firewall/router (IPCop), and I assume plugging the WAP into the hub will work fine.

Sorry i can't help much with brands as US pricing is a bit different from ours here. I'm hoping to set up wireless sonn for a lappy I might be getting, and so far have settled on a cheap Netcomm WAP (NP6800) and PCMCIA card (NP7032) as the cheapest and best looking for the price here. Only 812.11b, but us poooh childes can't be choosers, can we?

Check out Shopping and Trading forums, and post a request for a deal in the Deals Request forum for help.

Cheers
Mick
