| Cable Modem not picking up comp.
Hey all, ok i went to my friends house and tried hooking my comp into his Cable modem, but my comp never picks it up. it allways just gets an automatic private IP. I went back and forth on the settings, i dunno what else to do, does everybdy else have this problem? I have it at home on my cable modem too, and also at my neighbours.
Any ideas?
Thx |

Once you've connected to the cable modem, reset the power on the cable modem It has to pick up the new MAC address of your NIC.
Consider getting a router, it will make times like that infinately easier

well at home i have a router, but if im on the go and just wanna hook my comp into his line, it really ticks me off when it dont wanna work, So the modem has to pick up the mac of my nic?
And can i leave the vomp on for that?
Ok lets say it that way, i boot up the comp with the modem pluged in, But it gives me a automatic private IP, 169. whatever.
Can i just unplug the modem with the comp running and when i plug it back in it will work? |

Run winipcfg, release and renew all.

Turn computer off (if on). Unplug power from modem. Plug modem into computer. Wait 30 seconds. Turn on modem. Wait until modem has fully connected. Turn on computer. Enjoy. |

probably the easiest way would be to reset the cable modem while nothing is connected to it... once your pc is connected to it, and when it boots up it should pick up the IP from the ISP as long as you're set for DHCP (assuming his account is configured for DHCP and he did not request a static IP)
1. unplug friends comp from cable modem
2. unplug cable modem (preferrably for about 30 secs)
3. plug in your box (before its booted up)
3. plug the cable modem back in, let it sync up (data lite should be on)
4. Boot up your PC, and check your IP.
Good luck! |
