need some modem opinions

I was looking at the US Robotics 2976 56K V.90 Data, Fax, Voice Modem - OEM at newegg.com . Does anyone use this modem in North America? I just heard from my purchasing agent that this model will only work in South America! I have never heard of such a limitation. Even if this is true, Why would newegg be advertising it like it compatible to the average North American User without any warnings, pre-requisite etc...? Can anyone speak on behalf of this modem?

Clearly this is a modem intended for US use.

As far as components being designed for use in specific countries... yep it happens. Packard Bell (not Hewlet Packard) was notorious for this. They designed components specific to be sold in a certain country and only drivers for that country would work. Became a pain when Packard Bell pulled out of the US.

I see no problem with the modem. I looks quite good if the price is right considering that there are several reasons to opt for the newer V.92 modems.
Beware of HSP modems and Winmodems. To read about them try: http://www.56k.com/reports/winmodem.shtml

That's a good modem. You'll get good service from it. It plays nice with Linux also. I have the 2977 (no voice).

USR just has OEM driver info on it. Doesn't say anything about regions. I got to that page by selecting North America from the menu, so I would imagine your GTG.

I personally have a 5610A which has been faithful for many moons.

I'm aware of winmodems/ software controlled modems and had that guy picked out for just those reasons. I looked into the Kermit chipset being used by USR and I think we might go with the 5610 depending on availability and price of course.

It seems the TOPIC chipset is now obsolete and/or at end of life as they no longer manufacture them.

Lucent's chipset was just too much $$$

Conexant is still a possibilty and I have yet to look into thier offerings.

BTW....Thanks for the input.
