IP Address

I have set up a network at my house. One computer has been on cable internet for almost a year, the other has been networked at school. The computer that was networked at school is having problems. I cant get it to see the other computer or get the internet. I have tried a lot of things. I tried to repair the connection and it says "renewing the IP address and to contact the network admin or ISP." Does this mean that I have to talk to the cable company to get a new IP address or what do I need to do.

So you brought the one from school home...how are you connecting it to the cable modem? Are you connecting it through a switch or router, or just with a crossover cable into the computer that has been connected to the cable modem?

Chances are, your cable provider is not allowing you more than one IP address..

So you will either need to contact them and pay for a second IP address, or buy yourself a little proxy server (Like a D-Link, or Linksys or whatever).

I haven't ever bothered to try..but...maybe if you set it's default gateway to the IP address (192.168.x.x) of the machine that had been there it would work.

you cant use a switch to do this... you need a router. Thats how I got mine to work. Get a Linksys or D-Link broadband router, should work like a charm. Win XP has a excellent home networking wizard. Yes, MS finally did something right.

As an alternative...take the modem out of the switch...plug the modem into one computer...and connect both computers into the switch...then use ICS to connect.

Routers are unnecessary

yeah, you definitely need the router......

Just hook the router up, then hook the pcs to the router....which probably has several ports.

Then you set the pc's up to "receive IP address automatically".

You might have to "release and renew" the IP address.

Most home internet type routers have an online configuration page...and its a good idea to give them a different password....cuz most have a default password thats not too hard to figure out.

The only snag might be the way the isp hands out IP addresses..if they give them dynamically then the router should just hook up to the internet no problems...if they give a static, then you might have to figure out the "MAC" address of the comp they had originally setup, then see ifyou can have the router use that MAC address.
