Networking a Gateway laptop with my current connection??

Ok, here's the deal. I got a desktop with a cable modem. I also have a gateway laptop(just got it). It has a wireless network card on it, and we have a lucent technologies residential gateway. ok, we just bought a linksys 4 port etherfast cable/dsl router. Now, i tried to just hook my laptop up straight to the cable modem. and it doesn't seem to work. The residential gateway is downstairs and the laptop is upstairs. I don't know what to do? Can anyone help me? The wireless card is already installed on the laptop. Also, I got the cable modem hooked to the rg through fastcat5e cable. Can anyone help me? The one thing weird is, it says that i need to install a driver for the lan card, but i do that and it still does not work. Please, if anyone can help me, i'd much appreciate it. I'm sure someone will, cause this place is great. If you need more info, just let me know, i'll try to help. Thanks

I don't quite understand the picture..

Is this it? Cable modem goes to gateway. Cat 5 from gateway to desktop PC? And how do you get it to the laptop?
It's like that, and it's like this....

ok, i set up the rg to straight to the cable modem just to try it out and see if it worked. And it does not work. So in other words, i have not used the router yet, i was just testing the wireless stuff, and it doesn't seem to be working. Get what i'm saying??, if not, let me know. What i want to do is end up putting the wireless rg in the router and make a lan out of the desktop and the laptop. both are running win xp.

    Thanks

What exactly is a residential gateway. Forgive me if I am naive, but I have DSL, not cable.

So the residential gateway is what facilitates the wireless communication, basically like a wireless hub?

These may sound obvious, but make sure the gateway gets cable feed via the uplink port. Make sure the drivers are the XP drivers, as even Win2K drivers could be different. Make sure the laptop is close enough.
It's like that, and it's like this....

ok, just got the laptop to work on the wireless internet. Only problem is that i am right next to it. Isn't the point of these is so you can go other places with it. Now when i'm upstairs, it does not work. i thought they could go 1000 feet. well, anyways, now i have to figure something out, what i want to do, is set it up so that the laptop can sit upstairs and the desktop downstairs. i want to network them together. Would i have to put the cable modem up stairs with the wireless gateway thing(the wireless hub), and then run a long network cord downstairs? Is there any thing you guys suggest. how do you guys do it? also, how exactly would i set up the network for the 2 computers, i want them to share everything(internet, printer, files)

    Thanks guys

Here is a link to Agere's website for ORiNOCO Residential Gateway. Agere Systems, formerly known as the Microelectronics Group of Lucent Technologies...

    Residential Gateway

I think I read somwhere that there was updated sowtware you can download for this Gateway.

    RG-1000 Residential Gateway
Operating in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz band, the system gives you the freedom to roam up to 150 meters* at 11 Mbit/s, indoors or outdoors.
    EDIT:

And then, way at the bottom they explain what the * means...

    * In open environments.
In other words they do not promise a good connection if any through walls, floors, etc...

thanks spyder. i have figured it out. i got the laptop working upstairs on the internet. now, i was wondering how i'd go about setting up a network for the 2 to share files, printer, internet. I have a 4 port router. the thing i will need help with is, setting it up like on the actual computer(like in control panel). I have everything hooked up, just need to know what to do now, if any one can help, it would be appreciated. Both computers are running xp

    Thanks
