    Couldn't sleep, tried new browser

    Hi all, couldn't sleep, so I decided to try a new browser. Don't care for Mozilla, so I gave Opera a go.

    I'd say its a vast improvement over previous versions. And from what I have seen, it loads sites quite quickly. I might use if for a while and see how I like it, but it looks ok so far. Migrating IE favorites was easy (that is one of my peeves with other browsers)

    Give it a try, you might like it too.

    I could do without that silly little banner on top tho. It doesn't even seem to be doing any advertising at all.

    Give it a try, I am a hardcore IE user, IE is just so simple, and I am used to it. But hey never hurts to try stuff eh? =)

    Features, from what I have seen, include
    -pop up blocker build in
    -spam filter build in
    -what seems to me to be faster loading on websites
    -nicer looking GUI, kinda mac-ish
    -has a google toolbar thingie you can enable, without actually having to install it from google

    CONS so far there is one
    -the disability to have an icon or shortcut somewhere which will open the mail program separate, like how IE and outlook express is separate. But I think Opera is an all-in-one

    Yes, and then there's tabbed browsing too. Once you get used to that, I guarantee you'll be frustrated with any browser that doesn't have it (namely IE, I think pretty much all the rest do...). Just think... you can open a dozen browser "windows," all in your browser. Still just one browser button on your taskbar.

    all i have to say on opera is: tabbed browsing + mouse gestures = mmm mmm good

    plus the fact that you can pause downloads, turn off the computer, and resume them later

    GoldenBuddha:
    File --> New Window
    In the new window open M2 (the mail app)
    You have 2 seperate windows... yes they'll both say Opera, but one will have a mail icon
    (no this does not open it in a new tab, it will be a seperate window on your task bar.. its called a "Choice" which IE gives you none )

    tmx:
    Mouse Gestures is the nectar of the gods!!! Its SOOOOOOOOO much faster to browse without clicking the stinkin' back button all the time. Just hold your right mouse button and swing LEFT... OR even easier..
    Hold right mouse button down, and click the left button for back.... and hold left mouse button and click the right to go forward.. EASY!
    In Opera keyboard control is awesome, you can almost surf entire site with just the keyboard once you learn your way around

    I'm getting used to the mail client, and I do like

    The really nice thing about Opera is almost Everything is customizable! Skins, keyboard controls.. you can even re-create the mouse gestures if you want!

    IE = Obsolete Crusty Junk

    I'm still in love w/ Katiesoft. It's a 4 window extension of IE, that I'm lost without.

    Things I have seen in Opera which are popular features:
    1: tabbed browsing, already mentioned;
    2: can relocate any toolbar bar to any other location (vs IE 5.5);
    3: built in popup stopper (4 stage configuration);
    4: mouse gestures - some love 'em, I hate 'em, ymmv;
    5: saving a session and returning to that session; can also email the saved session file to other Opera users;
    6: zooming in/out on a web page.

    I registered, no more ads.

    I gave it a try today, looks good. Once I read the post about the tabs and tried it, I've fallen in love.

    ...Note that Opera is built from Mozilla, as Mozilla is open source...it has the same features Mozilla does...plus an annoying banner

    well i've used opera and mozilla as well as firebird and netscape. All three or based on mozilla but with a few minor to major tweaks. Opera was ok but I didn't really did the add. Netscape is so wrapped up in the comercialization and aol crap it hgets annoying. Mozilla is cool none of the affiliation of the other two however it has some bugs and some issues that aren't worked out. Firebird was nice its basically a stripped down version of mozilla. All of them are 100000x's better than ie but not as stable

    Umm I've never seen anything saying Opera is based on Mozilla
    I believe Opera is written from the ground up... Unless you know of a link to show differently?

    Opera had mouse gestures long before mozilla did.. and Opera is more customizable

    IE more stable? Nuh uh...that's why I switched to Mozilla...since I upgraded to XP I can't go 20 minutes without IE crashing or locking up for some reason.

    Opera is built on Mozilla...it's a known fact.

    Opera uses it's own engine. you have it confused Telexen. Mozilla is based on Netscape 6.0 . Naturally, now Netscape 7.0 is based on Mozilla.

    Opera is a fave, but it uses WAY to much screen space for me (I don't have the luxary of 1600x1200).

    Personally, I can't wait for Mozilla 1.4. I'm using Firebird (the beta) and it's SOO fast! Faster than Opera when I used it.

    Maybe its another problem elsewhere in the system, not IE. Telexen. I have never had a problem with IE, neither has anyone I know, within XP Pro.

    truth is Windows NT, Mac OSX is all based at some time on Unix. But something based on another thing, doesn't mean its the same bowl of soup. Comparing Unix and the MAC OSX is like comparing apples and oranges. The quality difference is too extreme.

    Mozilla is so stripped down, the support for modern web design elements so poor, when I compare it to Opera, even if it was based on the same design, its hardly the same thing at all.

    the reason i dont use opera is not bc i dont like it, its just that i am so used to IE. also, i have a logitech mx700 so the mouse gestures arent that beneficial. i also have a popup blocker already. also i have dsl so there usually is no need to pause downloads. the only thing i can see that would help me out is the tabbed browsing. but isnt there a IE clone that does this?

    Yes there is... MyIE2:

    http://www.webattack.com/get/myiebrowser.shtml

    You guys got me goin on this stuff so I tried Slimbrowser which wasn't bad for tabbin, but I much prefer MyIE2.

    Guess I'll have to try mozilla now, but I don't know what may be different about it.
